Among the great many estates producing decent rosé in Provence, there is an elite group of 18 Cru Classé makers that constitute the cream of the crop. These are the best of the best, where Provence hangs its pretty pink hat. This one, made of a classic blend of cinsault, grenache and syrah, is equal parts undemanding and interesting. It’s delicately charming, with gentle aromas of tropical fruits, sage and mountainous Mediterranean minerality, finishing with a dash of grenadine sweetness and an orange pith twist. It’s the perfect pairing for anything involving sunshine.

Looking for the best? The cream of the crop and top of the top? We think we may have found it in the form of a delicious pink wine. What you are looking at is the number 1 French rosé Discovery by Wine Spectator. Very impressive indeed! The wine is made from grenache, which is the famous ingredient in Rhône rosé, with a splash of mourvèdre, super-charging the aromatics of the wine. Along with the beautiful perfume is a light and bright wine that glides effortlessly across your palate, with a balance of fruit, lively texture and fresh acidity.

Rosé from the Mediterranean coast of France has set the world benchmark for style and you’d expect nothing less from the French, who are absolute pioneers of wine. This is a classic example of the style. Salmon pink, luminous and fresh as a sea breeze; just one whiff of this is enough to make you want to break out the sandals and wide-brim hat. It’s all about softly sweet red berries balanced by a gentle savoury crispness. From poolside to long lunch to New Year’s cheers, this wine has summer written all over it.
