The wondrous complexity of aged Rioja is pure magic in a glass. It’s deep, opulent and wildly evocative all at once. This ‘reserva’ from Bodegas Altanza had the benefit of extended ageing before release, making sure all its components were perfectly integrated and beautifully assembled. This one reminds me of Nana’s Christmas Pudding. There’s all that compact, dried fruity flavour, enriched with winter spices and no holds barred brandy infusion. There’s more, too. Chocolate, allspice, tobacco, jamon iberico… I could go on! There’s room for more time in the cellar too - nice to know there’s no rush here. Yum.

From one of Hawke’s Bays finest, this is a Bordeaux blend that means business. It’s merlot-dominant, giving it luscious approachability now, while the cab sav ensures a very long life ahead of it yet. It’s concentrated and rich, yet sweet-fruited and alive with excitement. Made only in the best years, it’s a wine we’d recommend to anyone to try at least once in their lives.

Mendoza’s master of malbec, Hevré J Fabre, returns with none other than his flagship wine. Aged in 100% new French oak, this is not for the faint-hearted - not quite a tooth-tinting tannin titan but not meek, either. Tannins are full and drying, sure, but also soft and smooth, tamed by a dark-fruited core of berries, cocoa and balancing acidity. This is overlaid with pretty florals and herbaceousness that only seem to add to its overall density and power. It certainly does remind you that Fabre’s roots were in Bordeaux - it’s a nod to the malbec-based black wines of Cahors. Savoury through and through but rounded out by distinctively punchy high altitude Mendoza fruit. Approachable, but much to think about, too. Over a fat steak, of course.

Everybody loves a cabernet, right? Little wonder it’s known as the ‘King of Grapes’. It makes some of the longest-lived wines, some of the most mouthwatering food pairings, some of the best gifts, and the most dependable deliciousness, year round. But there’s only so much Aussie cabernet you can drink before you start to wonder what else is out there. Trust us, bringing a Cali cabernet to dinner starts all the right kinds of conversations. It shows you’re adventurous, sophisticated, well travelled even. With 15+ years cellar potential ahead of it, there’s no rush to drink this, but it’s surprisingly accessible now too. There’s a lovely acidity that keeps things fresh and lively, balancing the dense, chewy core of red-blooded flavour. It’s a showstopper now, and it’s only gonna get better.

Think of this as semi-skimmed Châteauneuf. For those who want all the flavour of the Southern Rhône, without the siesta-inducing weight of some of those powerhouse premium wines. It’s still got a fair bit of richness to it, with velvety plush fruit and chewy texture. It’s a luxurious feel without being OTT. Think dark cherries, a dash of liquorice, spice and a sprinkle of grippy tannin. Better for your wallet, better for your waistline. (Disclaimer: I completely made that up.)

In a world where imported wines often cost so much as to simply not be worth it, this beauty is a very welcome relief. It’s not Barolo, but it was never meant to be! It’s a delicious nebbiolo from Italy, with bags of character, at a price that means you can actually enjoy drinking it any day of the week. How’s that for a revolutionary concept? There’s all the acid and tannin you’d expect from the grape, framing a rustic picture of violets, rosehip and sour cherries. In the spirit of the wine, leave your white truffles for the real exxy stuff. This one is happiest with a simple Bolognese or cheese sauce, and poured round the table in hearty glugs. Cin cin!
