Mencía is an intriguing grape, famous for its perfume and ability to make reds that range from light and ethereal to medium-bodied, deep and powerful. The Bierzo region in northwest Spain is the home of mencía, where the combination of old vines, slate soils and high altitude make for some incredible wines. These three very fine wines are from two of the regions best - Losada and Merayo - from the the top of their ranges, showing off what mencía is capable of - depth, power and finesse.

James Suckling thinks this is the best wine from Bierzo, in Spain’s north-west, and one of the best from Spain. Wow! Big call, but we have tasted this deep and layered wine and agree that it is exceptional. The wine is made from 95% Mencía and 5% indigenous local varieties; from a single vineyard call ‘La Bienquerida’, which is an ancient, 100+ year old plot. Give this wine some air and enjoy tasting it evolve. It’s a fascinating variety, and this example has everything from tar and roses to potpourri and Indian spices happening. It’s got lovely medium weight and crunchy acidity, draped with dripping cherry juiciness, and a dark and slatey finish. Concentrated and serious, and very, very delicious.

To give you an idea of what to expect from this wine, mencía can make wines that resemble anything from Cru Beaujolais to Northern Rhône syrah. Their calling card is magnificent aromas of violets, raspberries and black tea. This wine has a firm medium body, intense core of red and dark berries and a warm lick of quality French oak to finish - incense, plums and herbaceous crunch. The high acidity will allow this to cellar beautifully.

If you have ever tried the Merayo family’s estate mencia, you will know that they over deliver and then some! ‘Las Tres Filas’ means ‘The Three Rows’ and comes from a special patch of vines in their high altitude vineyards in Bierzo. This 95-point wonder of a wine was always destined for greatness. The vines are 80+ years old, adding depth and layers of flavour to the wine. The soil is rocky clay, which has added richness and mineral notes. Finally, there is just the right amount of French and American oak seasoning the wine.
