Why do we love this case?

Mmmencia, monastrell, garnacha, tempranillo... even the variety names make me drool. It might just be a Pavlov’s dog-type reaction given the sumptuous Spanish reds I’ve had in the past, so please excuse me while I clean myself up. And, just because we all love good surprises, we’ve chucked a cheeky Portuguese into the mix for you enjoy some cross-border comparison. A quick warning though - this collection of reds will have you drooling too, so crack out the manchego and the jamón and invite a bunch of friends over because this is going to get intense, real fast.

Remember it’s only a six pack and you might need to order in many multiples. Each six pack contains one bottle of the following irresistible wines:

Rioja DOC

Cerro Añón Gran Reserva 2010

Gran Reserva sits at the very top of the Rioja classification scale. This is as big, mature, oaky and complex as it gets. These wines have serious cellar potential and can reach unbelievable levels of depth. For all that French and American oak treatment, nothing has dampened its spirit. It’s punchy as anything, with maturation time just softening the edges and giving it a silky veneer of tobacco and vanilla over that raucously ripe red fruit. Gran Reserva wines must spend a minimum of two years in oak, and a further three in bottle, before they can be released. All that time and effort for this price is truly staggering.

This wine is from the little-known region of Jamuz, in the northwest corner of Spain. It’s a blend of three grapes, namely: Prieto Picudo, Mencía and Alicante Bouschet. I reckon this is uncharted territory for most of us (myself included). The region is somewhat sheltered from the cold Atlantic by Mt Teleno, though the altitude still gives plenty of sunshine by day and cool nights. This gives a wine of fantastic structure and freshness. Lovely black berries faint balsamic notes combine with spicy cocoa and hints of scrubland. It’s saved from being too rustic by the sweet fruit that gently tempers the whole. This is a little different from the classic Spanish wines of Rioja and Ribero del Duero. But, it’s just as characterful, and the quality is there in spades. Sometimes the best adventures are off the beaten track.

Best of Region Concurso Uva de Ouro 2018

Made of a blend of three grapes whose names I struggle to read, let alone pronounce, this is a wine that captures the spirit and terroir of Portugal beautifully. The warm, sunny climate allows for fantastic ripening with grapes, leading to characteristic plush, juicy berries on the palate. Think Port, but dry. You get all of the fruit-rich fun, without any of the cloying sweetness. A drizzle of balsamic here, a sprinkle of cocoa there, and a few rough shavings of dark chocolate round off the palate with a good amount of complexity to dive into. The tannins are present, but well contained and balanced. This is a fantastic sidestep from Spanish wines, offering plenty of warmer-climate plushness, but the benefit of exotic new flavours from new combinations of grape and terroir.

Los Frailes Caliza 2016

There’s so much interesting stuff to say about this wine... Firstly, it’s a single vineyard monastrell (as mataro’s known in Spain) from about halfway between Valencia and Alicante. The winery’s now being run by the 13th generation of the Velázquez Family, since their ancestors bought the site from Jesuit friars in 1771. The grapes are hand-picked from unirrigated vines, and then see hands-off winemaking in the same amphora the friars used in the 18th century! Then there’s another ten months of ageing in the same vessels. This extraordinary story alone makes it worth a try! The wine is fantastic, unsurprisingly. Grown in the eponymous caliza (limestone) soils, it’s given freshness by altitude and ripeness by the hot Mediterranean sun. It’s as full of ripe red fruit as it is the crackling spice that monastrell is known for. Vigour, vibrance, verve, and a delight to drink. Nor is it too heavy either. Even at 13 generations old, it still knows how to party. Party on, Spain.

We didn’t really know we were looking, mofos. But we now know we’ve found it. This is top-notch Rioja. You can tell just by looking at it. It looks somehow livelier in the glass, more vital and intense. Tempranillo and garnacha make up the mix here, singing of juicy cherries and plums. Oak treatment comprises of a 70-30 French-American split, giving darker toasty notes and a background coconutty hint. The wine is deep and complex, but also fun and never too imposing. It’s suited to special occasions, but only the sort you actually enjoy. It’s far too fun for shareholders meetings and the like!

Not many know it, but graciano is something of a secret ingredient for many of the longest-lived Riojas. It provides the brightness and the structure to help fruit-heavy tempranillo to age for the long haul. Finally, this variety is seeing some of the limelight on its own, and doing very well in it indeed! Young and unoaked, this drop is all about the fruit. There’s a dense ripeness that’s deliciously inviting, with a backbone of acidity and tannin for freshness and drive. Awesome stuff!
