Why do we love this case?

South American vino is wildly popular at the ‘fo. We reckon it’s because those full-bodied, richly fruited reds appeal to the Aussie palate. There’s much for lovers of Barossa and McLaren Vale wines, in particular, to enjoy from South America.

We’re super excited then, to present this unique mix of some of the absolute best of the continent. With RRPs from $155 to an eye-watering $300,  we’ve used the ‘premium wine’ category as a mere stepladder to reach these top-shelf offerings. All you need now is an occasion special enough to break them out.

Every case contains one of each of the following:

Chilean red from old vines in the Maule Valley. How old? How’s 122 years sound?! This wine is a blend of 80% cabernet franc, with 10% cab sav and a final 10% carignan to finish. It’s been imported in refrigerated containers and stored for the best part of a decade in perfect cellar conditions. The proof is in the pudding, with a wine that tastes vital and virile despite its years. The super intense nose is all smoky and rosemary, while the palate is alive with blackberries and black currants. The 17 months of new French oak treatment provide a stunningly well integrated backbone for all that complexity. There’s life in it yet, but really you only need to wait for the next big occasion to roll around. An important wine for rich food and landmark occasions.

This is regal wine, fit for kings. Deep, royal purple in colour, it even looks serious. The complexity unfolds lazily, at its own unhurried pace. Black cherries and blackberries make the first impression, before unfolding with notes of graphite, scorched earth and dried figs. An ethereal breath of lavender rests over the whole picture like a gentle mist. The tannins are now soft as velvet and 24 months of French oak maturation has integrated perfectly. It’s opulent to excess, singing of grand chateaux and Fabergé eggs, despite its new world home. It’s been aged to perfection and is ready to go. Pull it out on important occasions; anything less and it’ll seem incongruous. But, when the time’s right and the company is ready, it’ll grace your table with an unmistakable presence you’ll never forget.

This is an absolutely stellar wine (if you’ll pardon the pun). When Wine Advocate say, “It could easily pass for a classified growth Bordeaux from a top vintage,” you know this is serious stuff. It’s a Bordeaux blend, of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Merlot aged for 18 months in new French oak, followed by no less than 11 years of perfect cellaring. The result is a wine that has gallons of complexity, but still the freshness of youth. The 100-120 year old vines bear next to no fruit. What they do produce is super-concentrated and incomparably nuanced. In the glass, you’ll find intense blueberries, tangy blackcurrants and heady violets, supported by integrated coconut oak and alluring smoked meats, nutmeg and tobacco notes from the development. Its powerful stuff, but not ponderous, and springs lightly from one flavour to the next. With perfect cellar conditions, it’ll continue to mature well, but if you’re in any doubt, drink it now - it’s already a showstopper.
