We’re getting into regal territory here with this one. It’s small production CdP made mostly from old-vine grenache with small amounts of mourvedre and syrah thrown in. In most vintages, Patrick destems before ferment, but chose to go with whole clusters for 2018. This results in an immensely complex wine that can cellar for ages. The folks over at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, a crew that scores wines rather tightly, have given this beautiful drop an impressive 97 points. We can’t really add much to that!

This is one to get excited about, mofo! We are talking next level in terms of quality, value and of course, taste. Les Bosquets in Gigondas have six centuries of wine-growing history, with the first vines planted in 1376. They are absolute masters of the craft, with an deep connection to the land of the greanche-famed region. This cuvee is a blend of some of their best sites, made with meticulous attention to detail, including a longer ageing period than many wines - first in barrel, and then coming together as a blend in cement. The wine is dense, rich and enrapturing.

The Northern Rhône is arguably where syrah reaches its fullest potential. The wines are both powerful and perfumed, commanding and charming, rich and silky. This granite-grown drop shows that classic sweet/savoury character beautifully. Deliciously ripe, dark fruit is pitted against black olive, cocoa, balsamic, and lashings of black pepper. The tannins are both fine and spicy, making each mouthful a lively experience. Matured in the traditional way, in the large-format, old oak foudre, there’s basically no decoration to speak of. It’s naturally powerful and unadorned, allowing excellent fruit and ideal climate do the talking. Cellar this beast for a long time.

From cult producer Laurent Habrard, comes an organically certified Crozes-Hermitage that is looking the goods and has a wonderful future ahead. This wine offers a classic expression of the iconic syrah region - equal parts deep and delicious. There are fresh black fruit aromas, along with violets and minerals, and the palate is fresh, but firm with tannins that will help the wine age and work well with food. Fans of the more serious versions of syrah from Eden Valley or Hawke’s Bay - don’t miss this one.

Gérald Lafont may consult to a host of wineries in the Rhône, but his heart lies with the family vineyard in Rhone’s Lirac. This is where his father Yvon showed a young Gérald the ropes. While Lirac might not get all of the attention like Châteauneuf-du-pape, it’s considered to be a bit of a wine trade secret - producing equally impressive grenache-based blends at a fraction of the price. Definitely grenache dominant with warm raspberry coulis, scorched summer earth and spice. But there’s a more brooding background of tar, molasses and liquorice from the syrah, and equal parts of cinsault and mourvèdre. The warm minerality reflects the vineyard’s rocky nature and warm Mediterannean summers. It’s a beauty - and a beast.

From the top young winemaking team of Baptiste Olivier and Gérald Lafont comes another vintage of their delicious Côtes-du-Rhône. This team work for some of the most exciting estates in the Rhône Valley and in their spare time create a few wonderful wines for themselves. It’s a pure and clean expression of the region with bright and lively grenache dominating (75%), with syrah (15%) and mourvèdre filling out the palate. Interestingly, this leans further into the blueberry fruit spectrum rather than the usual red fruits, with plenty of spice and earth coming through.
