Pinot Noir 2015
Marlborough, New Zealand
96pts Sam Kim | Gold Medal Royal Easter Show | 5 Stars Sam Kim
When you get past Marlborough’s massive wall of savvy b, you’ll be able to dig into what really hums from this beautiful region at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The winemakers there know it and so should you: Marlborough pinot noir is awesome, especially the single vineyard stuff that’s given the Rolls Royce treatment in the winery.
This one comes from 20 year old vines planted in free draining river gravel over silt loam and clay. After hand-harvesting and fermenting, the winemaker rests the wine in 30% new 300L oak. The finished wine is bright and aromatic, expressing blueberry, plum, violet, cinnamon and nutmeg. Behind all of this is a savoury character and hints of aniseed. Fine tannins lead to a focused finish with great length. This is a pure expression of Marlborough’s pinot potential.

This is Domaine Charton's Bourgogne-level pinot noir, made from a collection of sites and vinified with around 30% new oak and aged for just under a year. According to wine critic Robert Parker, they make “a range of generous, gourmand red Mercurey bottlings that display melting tannins and an abundance of juicy fruit.” This wine is a great place to start in exploring their range and also a good beginners step into red Burgundy.

A few folks on the Mofo team got to spend a little time in Central Otago a few years ago and still won’t shut up about it. ‘Nothing short of breathtaking,’ we were told, ‘from the views to the wineries to restaurants and bungee jumping.’ The same, we reckon, can be said of Central Otago pinot. Nothing short of breathtaking. This example from the global producers at Handpicked Wines has a touch of age and has moved from fruit-forward to much more mellow and savoury. It still has vibrant aromas of cherry and raspberry along with that earthy notes we’ve come to love about the region. It is a great example of a fine wine at a more mature moment in it's life - equal parts intriguing and delicious.

Auntsfield were Marlborough’s first vineyard and winery, established back in 1873, their single vineyard wines are all grown at the estate with meticiulous care, hand picked, hand sorted, carefully done to gently extract those delightful flavours and tannins so associated with pinot noir. What flavours you ask? All the ripe berries, black cherries and plums and a touch of dark chocolate and cigar, a true expression of what Marlborough terroir can offer for pinot noir.

Gold medals, trophies and comparisons to Gevrey-Chambertin - is there anything this wine can’t do? Well, actually yes, there is. It can’t sit in your wine rack for long - try it - you’ll see. One minute it’s there, the next minute your glass is empty and you’re wondering why you only ordered one case. It all bottlenecks to this: 30+ year old vines on sun drenched slopes, extra TLC in the vineyard and an expert winemaker - resulting in all the Upper Yarra goodness you can cram into a bottle.
