About as far from a politician as you can get, this savvy b screams texture, balance and integrity. Our buying team describes it as “absolutely ruddy gorgeous”, to use the technical term. I’m not 100% sure what ruddy means, but I assume they’re complimenting the huge bursts of peach, apricot and pineapple which De Villebois have managed to express post to your nose. If this vino was a politician, however, there’s no doubt it’d collect the popular vote. Decanter have awarded it some fancy gold bling, as well as 96 points, because this is as good as a mineral, flinty style sauvignon gets. The right to vote may be the cornerstone of democracy, but I’d prefer the right to drink top notch French savvy b any day of the week.

Platinum award, Best White Mâconnais & Chalonnais

A platinum award-winning Burgundy, this super elegant chardy is epitomised by florals, citrus and stone fruits. Peaches and creams, citrus and spice, juicy and so very nice, it picked up 95 points from Decanter to go with its platinum award for Best White Mâconnais & Chalonnais. With plenty length both on the palate and in the cellar, this’ll be a great addition for any Burgundy lover.

Michael Garner, Decanter
Italian import

This Italian import comes from a family winery out near fair Verona in the Soave appellation. Made from the indigenous garganega grape, it was born into volcanic soil and grew to become a fresh, minerally vino with flint, citrus and floral notes. This wine copped 95 points from Michael Garner at Decanter thanks to its matching of “extreme flavour intensity with finesse on a stupendously long palate”. It’d be a tragedy of Romeo & Juliet proportions to miss out on this.

Jean Loron, c'est bon. This producer has been making wine in Beaujolais and Bourgogne for over 300 years, so has some idea of how to do it well. They also have all the toys, and make surprisingly modern styles, keeping on the cutting edge of winery tech. Art meets science in all their wines, and it shows through in balance, texture and terroir expression.

Piedmontese chardonnay is to Italians as Adelaide Hills cortese is to Australians - the early examples are exciting and there is a lot of potential. They've been doing it for longer in PIedmont though, so the vines have had more time to get the lay of the land. The result is a more tropical, aromatic style of chardonnay than you might expect, with lovely nuttiness and texture.

Oh Veneto. You gave us the Merchant of Venice and Romeo & Juliet but you just levelled up with this amazing grigio. Franchetto are one of the best producers in the region, with perfect soil for growing vines thanks to its location at a now extinct volcano. Unfortunately not on top of the volcano but still, this grigio would make more than an adequate sacrifice to the gods. Fresh and sophisticated with, pears, apple and spice at the forefront, it’s super fragrant and slightly floral, both persistent and minerally. The vines are grown at about 600m above sea level, the perfect spot to produce stylish, refreshing grigo like the one about to enter your glass. And heart.
