Why do we love this case?

It’s called the Premium Euro Red six-pack for a reason. This really is top-shelf gear from the best old-world regions in the world. There’s Italian flair. French nous. And Austrian quality that you’d expect. A Contiki tour for your tongue. For adults.

Every box contains one of each of the following:

Barbaresco is widely regarded as more approachable than its brash, ballsy sibling, Barolo. There’s still acid and tannin to spare here, but it’s softly aromatic and harmoniously put together. The complexity and depth of flavour is second to none, with heady aromas of roses and violets, alongside sweet, exotic spices and a sprinkling of dusty cocoa. It’s that bit more versatile than Barolo, suited to big, rich stews as much as it is to delicate game and truffle dishes. It’ll age miraculously well, though there’s no need for Barolo’s 20-odd years before opening. This one is absolutely delightful now after a spin in the decanter, but will sit happily in the cellar for well over a decade.

Patrick Lesec is a jovial, Robin Williams-esque kind of man, with a similar comedic twinkle in his eye. This must translate something unique into his wines, because they’re pretty special. From 75+ year old vines, this wine’s incredible. 80% grenache, with the balance split between syrah and mourvedre. Powerful, full-bodied, complex - loads of red fruit, ripe and spicy, but plenty of earthy, almost-feral notes that make this a few notches above the norm. And it ain’t easy eking a 95 out of ol’ mate Parker.

This is a top-shelf take on what these guys can do with a GSM. Made only in the best years, it’s rich, velvety and downright luxurious. It’s grenache dominant, at 80%, and positively revels in that old-vine grenache flavour. Think dark red and black cherries, candied orange, orange peel, a touch of liquorice and some dark spice undertones. It’s cream-on-top style wine. There’s plenty of tannin, but the texture is all about luxury. Ventoux offers great value for money as a region, and even this premium drop is no exception. Save the big names for impressing the boss. Pull this out with mates who enjoy a fantastic wine.

If I said I were a Grand Cru, would you hold me against you? Or at least put me where I belong - in a cellar resting patiently for a few years, waiting for that special night we can be together again. I mean, we can do dinner now, but now’s not our time. Talk to me after 2020, at the earliest. Right now I’m rich and ripe - lots of plums, vanilla and milk choc. Forest floor and herbal undergrowth are hidden softly underneath - sage and oregano, tobacco leaf. Spice ekes in around my edges. I’m packed with broad, silky tannin riding on a backbone of bright acidity. I have loads of structure, but I’m still friendly. Now’s not the time though, but the wait will be worth it. I’ll make sure of it.

Beaujolais - it's Burgundy - just think of it as a different brother from another mother - the Gamay grape instead of Pinot Noir. And it delivers similar results to its better-known sibling. Here's one that definitely pumps up the volume with black-scented fruits, liquorice all-sorts, a generous structure and a substantial mineral drive on the finish.
