From one of the bona-fide legends of Châteauneuf, and one of the regions absolute most exciting producers, comes this top-tier bottling. Built to last, this line is always nothing short of heirloom-worthy. Vines planted in 1902 give absurd levels of concentration: raucous dark berries, tart licorice, earthy undertones, meaty bite, pipe tobacco aromatics. It’ll keep getting better and better with time, but this isn’t young Bordeaux – an hour or so in the decanter is all it needs to open up into a seriously, seriously impressive wine.

This is about as good as Bordeaux gets before we’re thoroughly into ‘remortgage’ territory. A cracking vintage combined with a chatêau on an exponential upward curve produced this firecracker. Jane Anson of Decanter calls it, “The best wine I have ever tasted from the property.” It’s aromatic and lifted on the nose, almost belying the powerhouse punch to the palate. Flavours are classic Margaux; all the hallmark notes that you want in a top-notch cabernet. It’s got the drive to cellar for ages. You want to be drinking this from 2025, we reckon, and that window will run right up to 2040 and maybe even beyond. If you do open it sooner, give it a few hours in the decanter. It definitely won’t disappoint anyway. But make sure it’s a special occasion. Not being able to wait a decade is forgivable, pairing with cheese on toast on a Tuesday night in front of the TV is not!

This wine was destined for greatness. While Serralunga d’Alba produces powerful wines of enchantment, this vineyard has the added benefits of its particularly sun-soaked aspect. It’s complex, but coiled youthfully. Distinct cherry cola, violet, earthy truffle and smoked meat assaults your senses, while chinotto and rosemary lead to an intensely focused finish. Greatness may take time, but thankfully we’re already six years in. You could wait, but armed with a decanter, you certainly don’t need to.
