Premium Chenin Blanc Trio

No area in the world has had as much success with chenin blanc as South Africa, perhaps even including the variety’s historic home of Anjou in France. And in our opinion, no producer in South Africa has reached the level of complexity and excitement with the grape as has David & Nadia. This tiny family-owned project out of Swartland focuses on biological farming and minimal intervention in the cellar, leading to enthralling expressions of chenin. Here’s three of their finest examples.
Each case contains ONE bottle of the following:

Skalielop is a vineyard that was planted on shallow shale soils in the Paardeberg back in 1985. The wine expresses potpourri, white and yellow fruit plus a little white pepper on the nose. The palate has excellent fruit density matched by bright acidity, the finish long and dry. There’s great focus and flavour intensity, along with a sense that this will age superbly.

Planted in 1968, this vineyard between Malmesbury and Darling is over 50 years old. The iron and clay rich soils enable a striking display of aromatics in the form of fresh flowers and stone fruits plus some leesy complexity and spice. The palate is rich and relatively thick textured – great depth of flavour with a gently savoury finish.

The Plat’bos vineyard will celebrate its 40th birthday this year. It’s planted over decomposed granite and sees one of the earliest chenin harvests in the region. This wine has an exquisite nose with notes of flowers and dried herbs ahead of lime, lemon and white peach. The palate, meanwhile, is crystalline – wonderfully pure and focused with great energy and length. It hits the target with pinpoint accuracy.
