When Mofo Buyer extraordinaire AKA John Clark calls something one of the offers of the year, you know it’s time to break out your biggest glass. This shiraz mataro blend is made from 110-year-old shiraz vines and 119-year-old mataro vines, an old vine vino that is the Barossa at its very best. Crafted by Lou Miranda Estate, this big, powerful blend has those rich, dark fruit flavours you’d associate with the Barossa, as well as lashings and lashings of American oak. If you’ve down with the Barossa and everything it offers, then these post-pensioner vines are going to really make your day. The older the vine, the less fruit it produces, the more concentrated the flavour, so concentrate hard and get around this boutique beauty.

We love these producers and this single vineyard shiraz exemplifies its Barossa birth country: big, bold and rich. Born in 2012, this vino is showing classic characters like berry, plum, spice and savoury notes. It’s powerful, full-bodied, elegant and pretty much everything you could want in a Barossa shiraz. Backed by 96 points from Sam Kim, it’s a great drop now but probably has another five years in it, so fire up the oven and chuck in your roast lamb ‘cause this single vineyard shiraz makes everything taste better.

Mofos, Karel (our wine buyer) is pumped. He’s ridiculously stoked to have this shiraz in stock and you’ll understand why when you open up the case at home. A super premium, super secret vino with five gold medals, 96 points from a major wine show, 95 from Huon Hooke and another major wine show, 94 from Halliday, 94 from Ray Jordan and a cheeky couple of trophies, this shiraz has been aged in the winery’s cellars for the last five years and is drinking superbly. Landing somewhere between medium and full-bodied, cherries and berries lead the aroma charge with gusto. They’re followed by a lengthy, flavourful palate with blackberries and dark cherries, accompanied by grainy tannins, a touch of oak and a bloody big smile.

James Halliday
5 Black Star Halliday rated winery

“As a buyer there’s nothing better than flipping through the pages of Halliday’s book and coming across a winery that you haven’t heard of before, and it blows you away. That’s exactly what happened when his latest book came out the other week and I opened up to a random page. Della Fay? Don’t know it. But want to.” – Karel, Mofo Wine Buyer “When we tried it with the team it really, really started to open up. It started off quite tight but after half an hour in the decanter some lovely layers of fruit really enveloped on it. It’s actually really rich and full-bodied with a very, very broad palate. A little bit of age on it which is great if you want to tuck into it straight away, but in my mind it needs minimum 3-5 years to really show its personality.”
