Geoff Johnston, the icon of McLaren Vale. To know his name is to know the region, and the hard working people who have single-handedly put this unassuming town on a map. In honour of his 50th vintage, this wine speaks to Geoff’s character: determined, endearing, and engaging. Coming off the shiraz block Geoff planted with his father Digby in 1971, it’s all about the story and the soil when it comes to this milestone. Upfront dark plums, blackberries and mocha sits neatly on the palate, before reaching peaks of vanilla and spice (and all things nice). Just like the person it celebrates, this wine is all about character, and is in the game for the long haul.

We hardly feel like we have to say much about this wine. We saw three words, and we were hooked. Pirramimma, Barossa, shiraz. You can thank us later. We needn’t tell you how iconic Pirramimma are in the wine game, based in McLaren Vale for over 100 years. Their red wines are high in demand, and we’re not surprised. They’re unbelievable value for money, and you know what you get on the label is what you get in the glass. That leads me to say- you know this wine is going to be rich and sumptuous. It’s all Barossa shiraz, with characters of Ripe black plum, chocolate, vanilla, and a touch of fig. If this wasn’t in the context of a wine write up, you’d be forgiven to think we’re talking about some kind of dessert. Fair to say, this is just as irresistible.

Here’s another vintage of this absolutely divine wine. Pirramimma are a fave of many (many, many) a ‘mofo, this time delivering their all-Aussie blend of cabernet and shiraz. From three of their best vineyards, including Ironstone, and some vines planted back in the 1950s, this wine shows off arguable the best vines of the region. Winemaker Geoff Johnston describes the wine as “a fine balance of the sweeter fine-tuned cassis of cabernet, with the plummy, blueberry and black cherry savoury notes of juicy shiraz. Couldn’t have said it better myself. If you’ve had the chance to enjoy any of the Pirramimma wine in the past, this is sure to impress.

A great vintage and some great old vines. Pirramimma selected only the best barrels for this release, one that is sourced from low-yielding old vine vineyards in McLaren Vale. There’s brightness on the nose, exhibiting rose, raspberry, pomegranate and cherry. Have a sip and you’ll find more of the same, layered upon cranberry, nutmeg, Christmas pudding and cedary oak notes. It’s rich and savoury, ready to go now, yet structured enough for years of aging.

This ‘Limited Edition’ sparkling shiraz comes from the best rows of their famous “War Horse” and “Ironstone” blocks. The vines are old and what they lack in quantity (yield), they make up for in superb quality. Full bodied, but balanced with pepper and spice, there is just so many layers to discover in this wine. Laden with luscious, ripe blackberries, earthy blackcurrants, mocha, hints of cedar and a dollop of liquorice, you’re in for a treat with this divine, velvety fizz (and just in time for the holidays).

When it comes to quality and consistency, Pirramimma is solid as a rock. They’ve been at it for almost 130 years, so it’s to be expected. This GSM is beautifully balanced, hitting all the right notes in terms of fruit, oak and tannin. The nose exhibits blackberry, plum and toffee, along with hints of pomegranate and cedar. On the palate there’s raspberry, more plum, cranberry and vanillin. The Vale is known for great GSM and this one fits the mold perfectly.
