Why do we love this case?

If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here. Here’s a mix covering some of the very best regions in the world. From perfumed and pretty to dark and sexy, there’s something for every occasion and every food pairing.

Every case contains TWO bottles of each of the following:

Red
Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley

Sunshine Creek Pinot Noir 2018

James Halliday
Gary Walsh

Yarra Valley pinot noir has become an international phenomenon in the past 20 years. Sunshine Creek have recognised just how well this wine travels across the globe, and have made this wine in a more ‘international’ style. So what does that mean? It’s silky smooth, a little fuller in fruit (think black cherries and strawberries) and buttressed with a hints of earthiness and cola. This isn’t sitting on the funky end of the pinot spectrum, but rather the elegant end. Easy drinking and ultimately enjoyable - something that appeals in every corner of the world.

Gapsted are nestled up in Victoria’s High Country (in Gapsted, of all places), and have to be one of Australia’s leading wineries for value. Pinot is a tricky grape to grow at the best of times, and it’s all the harder when you’re working to a budget. But these guys know what they’re doing. Ripe, red berries and cherries, sizzling spice, crunchy herbs and a dash of that something magic that makes pinot the captivating mystery it is. A light lick of French oak gives it the springboard it needs to jump to life on the palate. Cracking stuff!

Single Vineyard

Single Vineyard Waipara pinot on a steal of a deal! Torlesse’s Omihi Road is a north-facing vineyard that enjoys a slow ripening period for its grapes, adding to the complexity of the wine. The vines are some of the oldest in the region, and the clay-heavy soils lead to wines of fuller body and flavour. This one expresses allspice, darker fruits and a bit of earthy musk, all typical of pinot from Waipara. Torlesse is more than just the wines in the bottle. They have recently opened the Torlesse Biodiversity Trail, a protected area dedicated to the regeneration of native plants and animals. To practice what they preach, they have also turned their grapegrowing and winemaking efforts into sustainable operations. Good pinot you can feel good about drinking at a great price.

MacArthur Ridge is a 20-year old vineyard with exceptional drainage located just north of Alexandra and between the Mata-Au and Manuherikia Rivers in Central Otago. Brassknocker is McArthur Ridge’s fruit-driven drink now-ish pinot noir. There’s still a bit of oak on it, but the plum, strawberry, and rhubarb brightness rule the day. You’ll even find a touch of mocha in there and the typical Otago herbaceousness and spice. A long finish with a fine acid line complete what is a total knockout for Otago pinot at this price.

The name Wild Earth came to prominence for quality pinot back in 2008, when trophies were being awarded to them for their 2006 vintage. They didn't stop there, with every one they’ve made since boasting trophies, golds, points and absolute smashability. From a ripping Bannockburn single site, it just has everything: elegance, grace, poise, power. A seductive bouquet of black fruits and a touch of earthy complexity. Expect dark cherry, plum and thyme on the palate. This has it all in check, composed and confident.

It isn’t easy sourcing pinot from Geelong. There just isn’t that much of it to go around. A shame really, as the style is absolutely lovely. So when one comes around that’s this enjoyable at this price, you gotta jump on it. The wine presents with black cherry, some spice and a little bit of earthy funk. It’s fragrant and has settled nicely into its prime after a few years in bottle. And if the sun is high in the sky but you still fancy a red, you can’t go wrong putting a little chill on it. That’s versatility right there!
