Why do we love this case?

If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here. Here’s a mix covering some of the very best regions in the world. From perfumed and pretty to dark and sexy, there’s something for every occasion and every food pairing.

Every case contains TWO bottles of each of the following:

McArthur Ridge Southern Tor Pinot Noir 2014
Cherry
Spice
Herbaceous
Light-bodied
Grippy
Ethereal

McArthur Ridge is a 20-year old vineyard with exceptional drainage located just north of Alexandra and between the Mata-Au and Manuherikia Rivers in Central Otago. Southern Tor references a hilly outcrop towards the south end of the vineyard, the source for this wine. The grapes were harvested by hand and even after seven years, exhibit bright primary fruit characters in the wine. Think plums, cherries and strawberries. Of course those secondary notes have also sprung forward with a bit of char, dried herbs and mushrooms. There’s a nice mineral line as well, finishing off what is a complete expression of Otago pinot with some age on it.

Mofo Fave

2021 proved to be a strong vintage in Tasmania; quantities were up on 2020 and quality was strong across the board. And with Tassie pinot being in such high demand, we were quite chuffed to get our hands on this drop from Riversdale located in Apple Isle. It’s quite elegant with a bit of earthiness behind the cherry and strawberry fruit profile. Up front you can taste some bramble drawn from partial whole bunch pressing, but that soon gives way to the silky palate and gently spiced finish. We’ve got access to a decent amount of this wine, but Tassie pinot tends to fly off the shelf.

Sashiko is the fun side of Hills producer Sew & Sew. You'll see why when you pour the wine and encounter plump, juicy plums, red currants and strawberries and bright, lifted spice on a firm palate that sits between light and medium-bodied. It’s a really joyful wine with bursting fruit and good concentration. There’s bright acid that lifts that palate, giving great length and making it a great food wine.

It isn’t easy sourcing pinot from Geelong. There just isn’t that much of it to go around. A shame really, as the style is absolutely lovely. So when one comes around that’s this enjoyable at this price, you gotta jump on it. The wine presents with black cherry, some spice and a little bit of earthy funk. It’s fragrant and has settled nicely into its prime after a few years in bottle. And if the sun is high in the sky but you still fancy a red, you can’t go wrong putting a little chill on it. That’s versatility right there!

The name Wild Earth came to prominence for quality pinot back in 2008, when trophies were being awarded to them for their 2006 vintage. They didn't stop there, with every one they’ve made since boasting trophies, golds, points and absolute smashability. From a ripping Bannockburn single site, it just has everything: elegance, grace, poise, power. A seductive bouquet of black fruits and a touch of earthy complexity. Expect dark cherry, plum and thyme on the palate. This has it all in check, composed and confident.

Gapsted are nestled up in Victoria’s High Country (in Gapsted, of all places), and have to be one of Australia’s leading wineries for value. Pinot is a tricky grape to grow at the best of times, and it’s all the harder when you’re working to a budget. But these guys know what they’re doing. Ripe, red berries and cherries, sizzling spice, crunchy herbs and a dash of that something magic that makes pinot the captivating mystery it is. A light lick of French oak gives it the springboard it needs to jump to life on the palate. Cracking stuff!
