For pinot at this price, it’d be fair not to expect much. It’s just a really tough grape to handle at the best of times, let alone when on a budget. Every now and then, though, you do find some gems. This is one of those. Made by the team at Matahiwi, who are known to over-deliver, this pinot does, and then some! Light and bright, it ticks the fruit, complexity and pinosity boxes with a flourish. A firm favourite of our customers and staff, excitement levels get pretty high when Matahiwi enters the building.

Gapsted are nestled up in Victoria’s High Country (in Gapsted, of all places), and have to be one of Australia’s leading wineries for value. Pinot is a tricky grape to grow at the best of times, and it’s all the harder when you’re working to a budget. But these guys know what they’re doing. Ripe, red berries and cherries, sizzling spice, crunchy herbs and a dash of that something magic that makes pinot the captivating mystery it is. A light lick of French oak gives it the springboard it needs to jump to life on the palate. Cracking stuff!

MacArthur Ridge is a 20-year old vineyard with exceptional drainage located just north of Alexandra and between the Mata-Au and Manuherikia Rivers in Central Otago. Brassknocker is McArthur Ridge’s fruit-driven drink now-ish pinot noir. There’s still a bit of oak on it, but the plum, strawberry, and rhubarb brightness rule the day. You’ll even find a touch of mocha in there and the typical Otago herbaceousness and spice. A long finish with a fine acid line complete what is a total knockout for Otago pinot at this price.

Sashiko is the fun side of Hills producer Sew & Sew. You'll see why when you pour the wine and encounter plump, juicy plums, red currants and strawberries and bright, lifted spice on a firm palate that sits between light and medium-bodied. It’s a really joyful wine with bursting fruit and good concentration. There’s bright acid that lifts that palate, giving great length and making it a great food wine.

Altamont Wine Studio is the brainchild of a couple of Adelaide Hills winemakers who source fruit from around the region. This pinot comes from a vineyard in Piccadilly and is made at Tapanappa. It sits on the fuller, more savoury side of the variety, expressing rhubarb, spice, bramble, sarsparilla and cut grass. Cherry leads the fruit charge and the finish is one of fine chalky tannin. A lovely contrast to many Hills pinot's and certainly one to ponder.

The name Wild Earth came to prominence as a quality pinot back in 2008, when trophies were being awarded to them for their 2006 vintage, and every future pinot they’ve made has enjoyed trophies, golds, points and absolute smashability. From a ripping Bannockburn single site, it just has everything: elegance, grace, poise, power. A seductive bouquet of black fruits and a touch of earthy complexity. Expect dark cherry, plum and thyme on the palate. This has it all in check, composed and confident.
