Why do we love this case?

If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here. Here’s a mix covering some of the very best regions in the world. From perfumed and pretty to dark and sexy, there’s something for every occasion and every food pairing.

The bottles pictured here do not necessarily reflect the bottle shapes or closures that will be included in this pack. The Vinomofo team is working from home, to help fight against COVID-19 and keep staff safe, so all that cool stuff we use to make things look pretty is back at the office. We reckon that, so long as the wine is good (and it is!) it doesn’t matter too much under the circumstances. Hope you agree!

Every case contains ONE bottle of each of the following:

Pinot Noir 2016

Marlborough, NZ

96pts Sam Kim | Gold Medal Marlborough Wine Show | 5 Stars Sam Kim

When you get past Marlborough’s massive wall of savvy b, you’ll be able to dig into what really hums from this beautiful region at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The winemakers there know it and so should you: Marlborough pinot noir is awesome, especially the single vineyard stuff that’s given the Rolls Royce treatment in the winery.

This one comes from a high density vineyard where one vine essentially makes one bottle. So here’s your pack of six individual vines in a manner of speaking. The fruit was hand-harvested, basket-pressed, wild yeast- fermented and moved to 25% new French oak to rest. The resulting wine is concentrated and textured with fruit along the black cherry spectrum backed up by herbaceousness and earthiness. It’s fairly robust pinot but still has that ethereal quality in spades.

A few folks on the Mofo team got to spend a little time in Central Otago last year and still won’t shut up about it. ‘Nothing short of breathtaking,’ we were told, ‘from the views to the wineries to restaurants and bungee jumping.’ The same, we reckon, can be said of Central Otago pinot. Nothing short of breathtaking. This example from the global producers at Handpicked Wines has a touch of age and has moved from fruit-forward to much more mellow and savoury. It still has vibrant aromas of cherry and raspberry along with that earthy notes we’ve come to love about the region. It is a great example of a fine wine at a more mature moment in it's life - equal parts intriguing and delicious.

Mofo Fave

Sergio Carlei sources three different pinot clones for this wine from a little vineyard in the Yarra, whole-berry fermenting them separately. The batches are then aged in a mix of old and new French oak for a year before a final blending. The final product is opulent on the nose with rips strawberries and cherries paired with truffle and forest floor. The velvety palate carries its acid well and hints at even greater developments after a few years of age, when more earthy characteristics will peek through. But no one’s forcing you to wait that long.

How lucky are we to get our hands on this Matua pinot, a top notch Otago wine with a bit of age. This gorgeous region’s wines can be a bit tightly wound in their youth, but give them a few years, and they blossom. This one is six years old and still fresh as a daisy, yet has developed some stunning secondary savouriness in the form of mushrooms, cedar, thyme, sage and anise. There’s a vibrancy as well, with hints of chocolate, cola and violets, and plenty of fruit jumping out of the glass. This pinot is sitting squarely in its prime drinking window right now, but there’s no harm in laying down a couple bottles to see how it develops even further over the next few years.

Brightwater started up almost 30 years ago after the return to Nelson of some ex-pat Kiwis. I guess you could call them re-pats? Their pinot's are consistently elegant, with this one displaying savoury characteristics along with black cherry and raspberry. It's concentrated with fine tannins and a quite full palate leading into a long finish. I'm sure the folks behind Brightwater enjoyed their time away from home, but we're sure glad they're back.

Mofo Fave

Trofeo Estate have dedicated themselves to the ancient practice of aging wine in handmade Florentine terracotta amphorae. In an effort to innovate, these guys have looked to the past, ditched the oak, and made a wine like it’s 600 BC. Doing so preserves all the gorgeous fruit intensity of pinot, saving it from being smothered by overly vanilla-ey oak abuse. It matures in much the same way though, being airtight, it’s not an oxidative process. The result is a cherry-rich, sweetly spiced pinot that’s exploding with character and nuances that you may well have missed out on otherwise. This’ll cellar wonderfully, but it’s drinking damn well now too. Plus, it’s the world’s best talking point when your guests arrive.
