Why do we love this case?

If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here. Here’s a mix covering some of the very best regions in the world. From perfumed and pretty to dark and sexy, there’s something for every occasion and every food pairing.

The bottles pictured here do not necessarily reflect the bottle shapes or closures that will be included in this pack. The Vinomofo team is working from home, to help fight against COVID-19 and keep staff safe, so all that cool stuff we use to make things look pretty is back at the office. We reckon that, so long as the wine is good (and it is!) it doesn’t matter too much under the circumstances. Hope you agree!

Every case contains TWO of each of the following:

Carlei Green Vineyards Cuvee Stephen Thomas Pinot Noir 2018
Allspice
Blackberry
Strawberry
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated
Killer Vintage
Mofo Fave

Sergio Carlei sources three different pinot clones for this wine from a little vineyard in the Yarra, whole-berry fermenting them separately. The batches are then aged in a mix of old and new French oak for a year before a final blending. The final product is opulent on the nose with rips strawberries and cherries paired with truffle and forest floor. The velvety palate carries its acid well and hints at even greater developments after a few years of age, when more earthy characteristics will peek through. But no one’s forcing you to wait that long.

Wine Front

A few folks on the Mofo team got to spend a little time in Central Otago last year and still won’t shut up about it. ‘Nothing short of breathtaking,’ we were told, ‘from the views to the wineries to restaurants and bungee jumping.’ The same, we reckon, can be said of Central Otago pinot. Nothing short of breathtaking. This example from the global producers at Handpicked Wines has a touch of age and has moved from fruit-forward to much more mellow and savoury. It still has vibrant aromas of cherry and raspberry along with that earthy notes we’ve come to love about the region. It is a great example of a fine wine at a more mature moment in it's life - equal parts intriguing and delicious.

Mofo Fave

Trofeo Estate have dedicated themselves to the ancient practice of aging wine in handmade Florentine terracotta amphorae. In an effort to innovate, these guys have looked to the past, ditched the oak, and made a wine like it’s 600 BC. Doing so preserves all the gorgeous fruit intensity of pinot, saving it from being smothered by overly vanilla-ey oak abuse. It matures in much the same way though, being airtight, it’s not an oxidative process. The result is a cherry-rich, sweetly spiced pinot that’s exploding with character and nuances that you may well have missed out on otherwise. This’ll cellar wonderfully, but it’s drinking damn well now too. Plus, it’s the world’s best talking point when your guests arrive.

4.5 Stars Wine Orbit

Marlborough pinot noir - that wine that those in the know know all about. This one from Spy Valley is handpicked from separate vineyard blocks, fermented in individual vats and blended up before bottling. This allows for the winemaker to see how each parcel develops before putting together the perfect amalgamation in the bottle. On the nose, there’s vibrant fruit, cocoa and cooking spices. The palate, supported by fine-grained tannins, is all raspberry, strawberry and herbs. There’s a touch of oak for structure, but it’s subtle. All in all, an excellent mesh of wine.

Alex K Big Backyard is a range from Kalex Wines, a winery in Central Otago that was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of the founder, Alex Kaufman. Alex fled the Holocaust to America and began a journey from abject poverty to incredible business success. The adversity he faced eventually drew him to Central Otago, a region that offers one of the most challenging terroirs for creating great wine. This challenge was the attraction. The Big Backyard pinot is sourced from vineyards around the region and made with minimal intervention, expressing a style of purity and freshness paired with Otago's trademark herbal and spicy wildness. A compelling wine with a compelling story.

This pinot by Rob Dolan inspires a love/hate relationship in me. I love the bright juicy fruit with the gentle earthiness and soft, easy tannin. I hate how quickly the bottle disappears. Be warned, mofo. You will definitely notice your friends swinging by more often once they’ve quaffed a glass or two of this with you. It’s just deliciously easy drinking, and made by a living Yarra legend. Bright cherries and strawberries, with just a sparkle of tannin for shape. It’s not Grand Cru Burgundy, it’s way more yummy.
