Why do we love this case?

Pinot noir...the most ethereal, the most finicky, the most beguiling of varieties. Many attempt to craft it, but it takes a certain skill and confidence to put something special in the bottle. And the grape expresses itself so differently depending on where it is grown. We’re  exploring four countries here - Australia, New Zealand, the United States and France - to get a feel for the varying ways pinot manifests itself and enthrals the drinker. Come join us on the journey.

Each case contains ONE bottle of the following:

Single Vineyard

Located in an old house that belonged to Vincent Leflaive, the Maison Chanzy in Puligny-Montrachet is a modern producer, crafting pristine wines across some of the best plots in Burgundy. Their Mercurey vineyard in the Côte Chalonnaise is located on marl limestone soils, perfect for growing pinot noir. It’s the most famous of the Chalonnaise villages and you can see why in this wine. Cherries and red currants abound, with earthy notes and a nervy acid that is common from these soil types. Light-to-medium bodies with the finest of tannin - this is one to drink now and for the next 5-10 years.

Organic

Bendigo Hills is the semi-arid subregion of Central Otago, with north facing terraced slopes, famous for growing some of the region’s finest pinot noir. Planted in 2003, The Stone Cottage vineyard is certified organic and the grapes are grown to perfection, before being handpicked and fermented. The region is famous for it’s deep and powerful pinots and this is no exception. The wine is aged for a year in 25% new French oak, which adds texture and a few notes of cedar to the fruit profile of cherries, sour plums and cranberries that abound in the wine. There is also a very alluring mushroom note that is present on the nose and long, complex finish. So much to see in this wine and it just gets better and better with air.

Five Stars Sam Kim

This pinot never fails to impress and as Sam Kim, NZ wine critic cites it’s “elegant, stylish and flavoursome at the same time.” This ‘fo favourite pinot beautifully expresses the terroir of Central Otago, plush and robust. Each glass is a microcosm of soil and climate, mixed with hard work and care, that’s the winemakers part of it. The result of this aged beauty is “dark cherry, plum and mixed spice characters with nuances of cedar and dried herbs. It is ripe and finely textured on the palate, and offers delicate fruit intensity together with savoury complexity, enhanced by smooth mouthfeel and polished tannins.” so says Sam Kim, and Sam tastes a lot of wine, heck it’s his profession, he would know what complexity tastes like. It’s incredible value for money, and a sure source of pride for any mofo who serves this to their guests.

New to the 'Fo

It’s no secret that Oregon has been producing some of the world’s best pinot noir for many, many years. We’re just rarely lucky enough to see it over here in Australia. And we’re pretty confident that you’ll never see it at this price, especially from one of the states most renowned and historic producers. Aromas of cherry, plum lavender and anise jump out of the glass. The first sip expresses pomegranate, cranberry and some nice acid and tannin. A bit of spice, smoke and structure comes from time spent in 20% new French oak. If you know Oregon pinot, then you’ll know what to expect. If this is your first foray into it, look out for the bright fruit of the Yarra style coupled with the wild earthiness of Central Otago.

This is a delicious, small production Mornington pinot from Shoreham Park that was meant to sit proudly on restaurant lists. With local restaurants unable to provide service, the wine needed a home. It’s everything you’d expect from classic Morno, with bright fruit in the form of strawberries and sour cherries, coupled with a bit of earthiness and funk.
