Mornington Peninsula! What a place! A great getaway from Melbourne that offers much to explore - including some of the country’s best pinot noir. One of my favourite explorations is sub-regions, which show off the particular micro-climates of the zones, through the lens of the glass. In the case of this wine, it’s from Sea Glass, with fruit sourced from Balnarring (halfway down the Peninsula, on the Phillip Island side). This pinot noir, made by the talented Andrew Santarossa, is brimming with fruit and spice - cherry is layered with baking spice and a touch of pomegranate. The tannins are present but integrated and with a good amount of acid make for a superbly long wine. A very classy glass of wine, Balnarring at its best.

Carlei Green Vineyards Cuvée Stephen Thomson Pinot Noir 2019

Concentrated

Carlei sources three different pinot clones from Green Vineyards in the Yarra, whole berry fermenting them separately. The batches are then aged in a mix of old and new French oak for a year before a final blending. The final product is opulent on the nose with ripe strawberries and cherries paired with truffle and forest floor. The velvety palate carries its acid well and hints at even greater developments after a few years of age, when more earthy characteristics will peek through.

‘Tres vielle’ indeed! These vines are 80 years old at least, giving a Beaujolais of incredible depth and sinew. There is a touch of the classic bubblegum (from carbonic maceration), but it’s not the main event here with red and dark fruits, spice and a great texture. It’s full of character with the structure for ageing, too. It’s been raised in cement for eight months, saving it from unnecessary oakiness, but allowing it to settle into its stride.

Trofeo Estate matures their wines in handmade Florentine terracotta amphorae. In an effort to innovate, these guys have looked to the past, ditched the oak, and made a wine like it’s 600 BC. Doing so preserves all the gorgeous fruit intensity of pinot, saving it from being smothered by overly vanilla-ey oak. The result is a cherry-rich, sweetly spiced pinot that’s exploding with character and nuances that you may well have missed out on otherwise. This’ll cellar wonderfully, but it’s drinking damn well now too. Plus, it’s the world’s best talking point when your guests arrive.

2020 was a challenging vintage in Tasmania; not in terms of quality but in terms of quantity. The wines look fantastic across all varieties. Unfortunately there just isn’t a huge volume of them. And with Tassie pinot being in such high demand, we were quite chuffed to get our hands on this drop made by Riversdale Estate out of the Coal River Valley. It’s quite elegant with a bit of earthiness behind the cherry and strawberry fruit profile. Up front you can taste some bramble drawn from partial whole bunch pressing, but that soon gives way to the silky palate and gently spiced finish.

d'Arenberg are best known for their silky, smooth McLaren Vale reds and their iconic Cellar Door know as The Cube. But they also are doing great things with pinot noir out of the Adelaide Hills. The have harnessed the ideal combination of altitude and diverse vineyard aspects to make an elegant and complex wine. This is a great example of classic Hills pinot - showing off ripe cherry and raspberry fruits, floral notes and a firm, but graceful body.
