Why do we love this case?

If there was ever a winter mix to sing about, it’s this pack of twelve muses for under a tenner each. Shiraz, grenache, cab, malbec, and back again, all with eminent presentation and pure hearts. Standing ovation material. You’ll want an encore.

Each ensemble contains a bottle of each of the following divas:

In Latin, the phrase ‘omne trium perfectum’ (rule of three) suggests that things that come in threes are inherently more satisfying and effective. And when it comes to wine, we tend to agree. Take this supercharged new release Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet blend, for example. Oh, holy trinity! Bringing Bordeaux class to the dinner table for just a fraction of the price, this powerhouse blend is all lifted black fruits, dark licorice and juniper aromas that bounce across a ripe palate of plummy fruits and red berries.

The most important thing about this wine is that it’s the harmonious coming together of varieties, regions and vintages. It’s a milestone wine, because it makes things difficult on paper, but just makes absolute sense in the mouth. It’s big, but flinty. Ripe, but nuanced. Complex, but eminently drinkable. Doesn’t miss a beat. It’s 2015 with a touch of 2016. Both excellent vintages, and we can only imagine this was done for complexity, evenness and brightness. It has all of these things, so…

Biodynamic, all the fruit, spicier than expected and begging to be cracked every day of the week. It’s dangerously moreish, don’t say you weren’t warned. We keep some in the fridge (I know!) to calm its exuberant fruit, and watch it change and pop out of the glass as it warms. Not your average cabernet, and all the better for it.

“They’re very good winemakers, these guys. They produce a very consistent product at a very consistent price. They’re grenache specialists, and add their silky Vale shiraz to the mix and you have yourself a winner.” So says John to the gaggle of geeks at the Tasting Bench. This is spicy, peppery, and juice-running-down-your-chin plums. A full spectrum of blue, black and red fruits, with a lovely doughiness to it, barbera-like almost but much, much richer.

This vibrantly fruity, unoaked grenache mourvedre shiraz blend does all the right things this maker’s been doing for a couple of decades now with this wine: it’s friendly and spicy, crowd-pleasing but complex enough to keep you coming back. Mulberry, raspberry, lavender, soft licorice and spice are wrapped around a firm mourvedre core, and super-fine tannins. Delectable.
