Why do we love this case?

We all have those moments of indecisiveness. What to drink? Red. Yes. But, what am I in the mood for? A juicy pinot from the Hills? A winter warmer shiraz? An Australian zinfandel competing with the Californians in body and flavour? And I’ve always wanted to try a cab sauv that  awakens your senses from first to last glass....

Fear not, mofo. This pack of mixed reds contains all the above, no need to make hard decisions here. We’ve made them for you, and (not to toot our own horn) but they’re good.

Each case contains ONE bottle of the following:

Rosenthal Richings Shiraz 2018

Mocha
Black Cherry

Year after year, we bring this wine back. It's incredible bang for your buck and everyone seems to love it. Rosenthal sources the grapes from Frankland River, so it’s going to carry a bit of spice along its silky smooth palate. The profile leans towards mocha, plum and dark cherries. If Victorian shiraz is too light for you and SA shiraz is too heavy, then this is your line to toe.

Old Vine

I was lucky enough to walk these vineyards a few months ago and spent some time with the family behind Viñalba. The old gnarled vines growing well at impossibly high altitudes require extremely dedicated attention. And the old world influence of the French-born winemaker leads to wines of not only the trademark Mendoza power, but also a nuance and elegance that lift them to the next level. Everything is done by hand from the vineyard to the winery and the resulting malbec is left to rest in fine French oak for twelve months. There’s a distinct pleasure in drinking this wine and understanding the cultural connection between the modern malbec of Mendoza and it’s origins in France. What a journey!

James Halliday
Five Star Halliday Rated winery

It makes sense that zinfandel thrives in the King Valley. The grape is an identical match to primitivo from Italy, and the KV is the Aussie home to Italian grapes. Zinfandel has the reputation for being rich, plump, jammy and opulent to the extreme - all good things. But it can also be hotter than a day in the desert and boozier than an Irish wedding. Both things this beautiful wine from Wood Park neatly avoids. If you like your wine full of full-fruited fun, accompanied by a good lick of American oak, but prefer it to not make your tequila look like a soda, this is just the ticket. Velvety cherries and berries, oak tannin and aroma, supple and satisfying. James Halliday is a fan and all.

Wrattonbully is a special place with ancient geology and unique terra rosa over limestone soils. When grapes from such a place are made into wine by a producer of calibre, such as Terre a Terre, it’s got to be a good thing. So good, that Decanter gave the wine 94 points. This shiraz, which is seasoned with a splash of cab franc, is a wine worthy of the accolades, exhibiting structure and style that speak firmly of the Rhône Valley. Earthy on the nose, dark fruits, stewed fruits, mocha, silky tannins. Medium bodied but very concentrated and powerful. Oak is present on the nose, but doesn’t overwhelm the fruit, rather making the wine really earthy and savoury. Smells like winter!

Peppertree always brings the absolute best out of Wrattonbully, and this cabernet is the bees’ knees when it comes to value. Expressive and concentrated with plenty of cassis and blackcurrant - there’s a lovely touch of leafiness sitting with background cedary oak and spice. There’s only one thing on the menu - lamb. Whether it’s Greek gyros style, a middle eastern spiced backstrap or a good old fashioned Aussie leg roast, lamb is the key. Baa-ring it on!

Killer Vintage

Pinot fruit shone the brightest in the Adelaide hills’ 2018 vintage as the long, warm March weather added extra plumpness and Tomich Hill has taken full advantage. Soft, silky and alluring from the moment you knock the cap off this number, right down to the last drop. Expect juicy, ripe strawberries and cherries up front and plentiful. The palate is slippery and smooth and a wonderful tartness due to its natural line of acidity, providing surprising length. Speaking of length, the finish takes you along the line of dried cranberries and fresh picked rhubarb straight from the garden. Next time the sun is shining, whip up a salad of watermelon, pomegranate, feta and mint and splosh a generous amount of this pinot in a glass and enjoy the flavour sensation.
