Mighty South Aussie Reds 5.0
- Mixed
- Various
This lineup of six reds from SA have another theme that ties them together: delicious smashability. They’re all from makers who are pushing the boundaries, and all in slightly different directions, and that’s what makes them so interesting. A very, very good pack of wines from the bleeding edge. Get involved.
Each case contains ONE bottle of these six wines:

The Cloudbreak range (made by Tomich) has had a makeover and how good does it look? It's not only the stubby bottle and sleek black and white label that are a step up - but the wine too. My notes say "super-fun, but with depth". It's a blend of 90% pinot noir 5% shiraz and 5% gewürztraminer - a bit more attitude than a straight pinot with spice from shiraz and a bit of exotic something-something from the gewürz. Well done Tomich - this is rockin!

This is one dangerously tasty South Aussie blend of, you guessed it, tempranillo and pinot! Smells like joven tempranillo and is full of cherry and red liquorice. It's the elegant, light body with fine little tannins and zippy acid that makes this wine just so easy to drink - it's bright, refreshing and deeeee-licious!

Touriga, refosco and gewurztraminer - together at last! This 'Light Red' is part of Vinteloper's Urban Winery Project - a people-powered project of winemaking in urban spaces. In this case, the light and bright red was made at Stomping Ground Brewing Co (in Melbourne) throughout February 2019. This is a wine to pop in the fridge, open with mates and enjoy with an open mind.

Sanglier bring us their take on a southwest French blend, a style where each grape supports the others to make a balanced and drinkable wine. In this case it’s 55% McLaren Vale grenache, 30% Clare Valley shiraz and 15% Adelaide Hills tannat. They call it a GST. Vibrancy and freshness are the themes of this wine. Lots of raspberry and spice on the nose and on the palate it’s medium-bodied and crunchy.

This is one of Rymill's small batch wines, showing off the usually blended French variety petit verdot. It's great to see such an established producer shining the spotlight on alternate varieties. In this case, it's a late-ripening Bordelais grape, so look out for big fruit, aroma and structure. It's smooth, plush and just yummy!

Lansdowne are one of the coolest of the cool climate, based in Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills. Their cabernet speaks of the Hills' cool nights and Lansdowne's light touch in the winery. It's medium-bodied with vibrant cassis and herbaceousness, sitting amongst a textured palate from 18 months in old oak.
