Why do we love this case?

This lineup of six reds from SA have another theme that ties them together: delicious smashability. They’re all from makers who are pushing the boundaries, and all in slightly different directions, and that’s what makes them so interesting. A very, very good pack of wines from the bleeding edge. Get involved.

Each case contains one bottle of these six wines:

Here’s McLaren Vale in a nutshell. It’s deep and rich, soft licorice and fresh leather over abundant red fruits, with a touch of spice. A little of that dried apricot character (you know, the one with the coconut dusting?). The palate is punchy blueberries from start to finish, surrounded by all the goodness hinted at by the nose. Tannins are bold but also supple, the finish long and composed, fading gently to a moreish savouriness.

Mmm, GSN. Wait, what? GSM, surely. Nope! Nero d’avola puts the ‘N’ in this new wave red, and gee willikers it works! With all the grenache red fruits, boiled raspberry lollies and spice, plum in the middle from shiraz, rounded out and topped with ladles of nero’s eponymously dark fruits. This is a crunchy and bright midweight, structured but extremely, enjoyably easy drinking. There are earthy, savoury undertones, but no heaviness that mataro sometimes brings with it. Hope to see a few more of these in the near future!

These siblings are pumping juice of supreme balance, that’s for sure. This packs all the richness you’d expect from a Barossa grenache blend, with a freshness thanks to sour red berry-style acidity underneath its plushness. It makes for a juicy deftness to the wine that is so often missing, and a soft wine that’s built to be enjoyed with tapas, or olives, or something aperitif-ey. I doubt there’s much oak here, and I dig it. Loads of blackberry, raspberry stick, spice and sweet plum. All driven home and stretched out by the fine acidity. Good stuff, once again.

This immediately smells like caramel cinnamon jam doughnuts, with a triumphant shaft of graphite through the middle, and a sprinkle of crystallised rose petals. Then there are loads of red berries, and a certain warm spice that makes all this quite a friendly nose, certainly easily approachable. It tastes like the freshest, juiciest of cherries, with soft and fine tannins that ramp up nicely as the fruit fades just as gently. Sud de Frank wines are made by mates Jared Dixon of Jilly Wines and Dan Graham of Sigurd. Both excellent boutique labels in their own right, and Sud de Frank allows them to let loose on a collaboration in the best way. With Lo Borret, their own brief was ‘juicy, fun and smashable’. Well guys, you nailed it. Or as Mofo Buyer Beth says, ‘merlot, carignan and semillon together at last!’ LOL. As ironic as it is, this is unquestionably delicious.

All the things that McLaren Vale does right, from a great maker. Shiraz and grenache, which are tried and tested in the region, and Portuguese variety touriga - which is one of the Mediterranean (well, Iberian) varieties that’s thriving in the region. It’s a bold wine, and it’s delicious.

Wines of Momentary Destination Lagrein Shiraz 2017

Lagrein’s a northern Italian variety that has pretty distinctive, hyper-aromatic florals and meaty overtones. We all know about shiraz, obviously. Accordingly, this blend of the two is floral, a tad grassy, and packed with loads of red fruits. A bit of classic lagrein bacon fat. But then more red fruits bundle in. The tannins are lovely, like your palate’s being run through superfine muslin over silk. Belying the name, your palate is more than a momentary destination for this wine. So make it feel at home.
