This is Chianti for the New World wine-lover. Bold and supple, with heaps of saucy black cherry action. The acid’s there; that common theme in pretty much all Italians that guarantees food-friendliness. Dusty cypress-lined gravel path tannins give just the right hint of the rustic, without taking away from the class and poise of what is a cracking vino. It already has one 97 point review and I’m sure there’s a few more accolades on the way.

From the uber-luxurious packaging (you could do a pretty solid workout with these weighty bottles) to the layers of dark fruit, interwoven with spice and oak - it is one dramatic Opera! From Tinazzi who work in the north and south of Italy, this is possibly the most impressive rosso blend you’ll ever try. The wine is dark and big in every way with stewed fruit, tootsie roll caramel, rosemary and thyme. If you are into plush, velvety, teeth-reddening, full bodied and luxurious reds - this is not to be missed. I enjoyed my bottle over the course of a week and the wine got better with air and was holding up very well at day five.

2016 was a stunner of a Chianti vintage, and the Carobbio - who are all about care and precision - have definitely made the most of it. This is a wine of extreme elegance and a rustic kind of finesse. Plummy richness, blackcurrant, blueberry, dried herb and blood orange peel, a little bit of that delicious asphalt smell (I’m weird, I know). Great grip and power. The palate is medium-bodied, but has a fullness to it thanks to the wonderful tannin, plus an elegant line of acidity. This is very, very good Chianti.

This organic Langhe Rosso from the boutique winery of the Giribaldi family has the typical components of dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo, but there’s also a surprising touch of pinot noir in the blend. It’s medium-bodied, ruby red in colour and bursting with aromas of cherry, redcurrant and tobacco. On the palate the fruit carries through, but is accompanied by hints of vanilla and licorice undoubtedly drawn from the wine’s generous time in seasoned oak. It’s easygoing enough to enjoy a glass on its own, but the acid structure is plenty apparent for pairing with savoury, meaty dishes.

When the Tuscan winemakers decided to blend in cabernet and merlot with their sangiovese, minds were blown and the Supertuscan was born. Sounds like a superhero origin story, I know. But it’s really the tale of a very traditional wine region doing something entirely unconventional. And it worked a charm. This one is half sangio and a quarter each cab and merlot. It’s given six months in older oak to build structure yet still let the fruit sing. Look for cherries, raspberries, chocolate and a touch of vanillin.

Bright and crunchy, this is the cheeky upstart Chianti that could. Loads of red cherry and plum, juicy and lifted. This is on the lighter side for a Chianti, and sings all the right tunes: a little chalkiness, fruit fullness and the right amount of indifferent, upstart attitude. But unlike that adorable train from the classic children’s story, this is for adults only.
