Why do we love this case?

The Langhorne Creek region of SA is a bit of an underdog. With solid reds that rival its flashy neighbours to the north, it’s no surprise that this year’s Halliday Best Value Winery comes from this gem on the Coorong.

Lake Breeze, a property run by the Follett family since the 1850s (vines planted in the 1880s) is quintessential Langhorne Creek with sprawling vineyards, a welcoming cellar door and bold reds that are tempered by, you guessed it, the cooling influence of Lake Alexandrina.

We’d like to say a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the Follett family and the team at Lake Breeze. This pack is a small glimpse into their range of thoughtfully-crafted and very delicious reds.

It's not only the Halliday crew that are Lake Breeze fans - the Real Review have been very complimentary of their wines, giving the 2018 cabernet 95 points, calling it "very young and full of life." We agree wholeheartedly with this statement about the three year old wine. It's a full-bodied wine, brimming with fruit, with a firm palate, well-integrated oak and a coolness to balance the abundant blackberry, cassis and blood plum. The abundant fruit and vivacious energy of this cabernet suggest it will age for a good 15-20 years.

The Section 54 Shiraz comes from their old vines and was raised in French oak for 15 months. It’s a generous wine with a velvety palate that transforms from juicy fruit to spice to mocha. I think we can thank the old vines for this complex array of flavours and textures. This wine shows off many things: Langhorne Creek's potential to make excellent shiraz, Lake Breeze's ability to craft a wonderfully deep and complex wine, and finally, the standout value available from the region and producer. No wonder they got the award!

'Bernoota’ was the original name of the homestead at Lake Breeze, an Aboriginal name meaning ‘camp among the gum trees’. From their roots in the 1850s to now, it's a place that's been home to the Follett family, where they have farmed and more recently grown grapes. The Bernoota is the humble Aussie shiraz cab blend and here's what Tony Love had to say about the wine in the Halliday Wine Companion Magazine: “Average vine age in the popular red blend (60:40 shiraz/cabernet) is more that 40 years. Each vintage shows a gradual easing back of American oak with more French in use, new oak also reducing now to under 20%. That said, the barrels are still an important part of the personality of this wine. It’s a traditional style, abundant dark fruits, captured ripe and vibrant and with a heap of black pepper in the spice profile. A wine that keeps on giving with every glass full. And will do so for many years.”
