Our mates at Rosenthal called vintage 2018 just about the best of the past 25 years. The long, languorous ripening of rockstar fruit gave second-to-none complexity. This cabernet’s all about blueberries, violets and plums, with fine and frisky tannins giving even more life to an already lively palate. It finishes gloriously, with notes of toast and dark chocolate lingering for aeons between sips.

Is there ever a situation where a margs chardy isn’t the answer? It’s the white of choice if it’s chilly, perfect on the deck on a warm day as the sun sets, versatile enough to enjoy over an array of meals and always a reliable ‘post-work-wind-down’ bevvie. But this little peach goes the extra mile; from St Johns Brook, this 2018 single vineyard chardy is in a super spot right now displaying crispness, freshness with an elegant, modern style but lashings of french oak to provide a delicious flinty frame around that pure Margaret river fruit. This sort of wine will disappear very fast out of your glass, so pace yourself mofo’s!

"Tension is the thing. This holds its nerve through a taut palate, its flavours of lemon sorbet, mineral, slate and lime drilling straight through to a long finish. Electric riesling." - Campbell Mattinson

Salomon estate, founded by Austrian (not Australian) Bert Salomon, has been put on the map by the incredible balance the wines strike between classic South Aussie flavour and distinctly European restraint. This shiraz cabernet could have been a huge, double shotgun-toting monster, with tannin to blow your face off. Instead, it’s lifted, juicy, lively, nuanced and textural. There’s complexity for days, and plenty of room to enhance it through a long stint in the cellar. Whether you’re an Old World fanatic, or die-hard true blue Aussie oenophile, there’s something for everyone to agree on here. It’s delicious, and bloody well made wine.

You probably know the deal with Margaret River shiraz by now. It’s that sorta all-things-to-all-people red wine. Silky smooth when well made and sitting right between heavy SA juice and herbal VIC juice in mouthfeel. Everyone at the table can get into it and the bottle’ll be gone quickly. Thompson Estate, a Five Red Star Halliday rated winery, makes this one that shows blueberry, red currant and cherry across the fruit spectrum with secondary characteristics of cola, vanilla, black pepper and cinnamon. 2018 was another exceptional vintage over in Margs and it really shines through in this shiraz. "Crushed, chilled, pressed, fermented with light solids, 3-4 months on lees. The quality of the fruit is the springboard for the flavour and texture of a very good gris. Nashi pear is a confident leader of the flavour pack, spice and stone fruit brining up the rear." – James Halliday
