Why do we love this case?

Ah, the age-old debate. Do I go for a gris or a grigio? Centuries of hard study and impossible calculations by wine geeks all over the world have us no closer to finding an answer. Then, someone at Vinomofo put this case together and we collectively face-palmed at the simplicity of the solution. Here, you get two bottles of six different wines. Each wine is a little different so you’ve got some room for exploration, too. It’s pretty much the best way to get around the grape.

Each case contains TWO of the following:

White
Pinot Gris
King Valley

D'Sas King Valley Pinot Gris 2019
Cloves
Pear
Spice
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated

The King Valley is glorious gris-growing country, and they certainly know what they’re doing with the grape. Nevertheless, the amount of flavour and complexity you get for your money is surprising. Luscious, plentiful orchard flavours abound here. Apples and pears, exotic spices, clove and almond meal make for a marvellous marriage with Asian cuisine or creamy cheeses.

Refreshing

5 red star Halliday rated winery

Delatite make wines to delight, and we’ve not tasted a single failure from them. Their vineyards in the Victorian High Country make them perfectly placed to tackle wonderfully aromatic whites such as this gris. A warmer vintage gifted them some lusciously ripe pear and white peach flavours, accompanied by the warm softness of jasmine. It’s rich and round on the palate, sumptuously mouth-filling and long in the finish.

Alpine & King Valleys

Gapsted Limited Release Alpine & King Valleys Pinot Grigio 2019
Apple
Citrus
Pear
Light-bodied
Bright
Elegant

In a years, we may well see ‘Gapsted’ replacing ‘value’ in the dictionary. These guys are synonymous with great drinking without breaking the bank. Not that price is the be-all and end-all. Wine has to taste good. And so this does. Crunchy apples and spunky citrus, lashings of cooly refreshing acidity and just enough texture to tantalise the tongue.

E. McDougall Pinot Grigio 2019
Lemon Zest
Peach
Pear
Light-bodied
Bright

Pinot grigio with a tickle of texture that’s enough to set it apart from the pack. If you’re looking for a foolproof Yum Cha companion, look no further. Bright enough to slice through rich, doughy dumplings, there’s just enough palate richness to stand up to them too. Think classic grigio flavours of white peach, pear, and crunchy green apple. Refreshing and, refreshingly, well put together.

Wines like this just show how far Australia has come working with the grape. Flavour-rich, textured and more nuanced than a Harold Pinter play, this is far more than a refreshing quaffer (though, in fairness, it can do that too). Honeydew melon, jasmine blossom and a Pink Lady apple smoothie made for a wondrous pairing with creamy cheeses.
