Why do we love this case?

We’re back with the latest edition of your favourite white comparison pack. Pitting the very best of the Francophile gris against the Italianate grigio, it’s a showdown to see who will come out on top. There can be only one winner.

You. Oh, and the wine’s all delicious, so you can probably disregard my hyped-up battle royale. Just open, pour, and enjoy. Cheers!

Each pack contains TWO of the following wines:

White
Pinot Gris
Adelaide Hills

Kin Pinot Gris 2018
Floral
Green Apple
Pear
Light-bodied
Fresh
Elegant

The Kin gris is an unusually book-by-the-cover wine. The pretty pastel label is actually damn close to what it tastes like. There’s lots going on, flavour wise, but it’s almost ethereal in its restraint. A lighter style, there’s lots of pretty elderflower aromatics over notes of ripe pair and cloudy apple juice. There’s some delicate lees work, giving a faint vanilla-scented candle vibe. It’s the definition of easy drinking, and very people-friendly. Made in extremely low quantities, it’s a soulful wine that feels good for the soul.

We love Gapsted, and have them working hard to keep up with our demands for more! Gorgeous, juice-rich apples and pears are at the fore, with the fruit intensity balanced beautifully by crisp acid. The vines are in the prime of life, and delighting in their ideal climate. Sam Kim calls it ‘elegantly framed.’ Delicate and delightful.

Ludic means ‘showing spontaneous and undirected playfulness’. I can’t believe I haven’t been called this before now. It’s ludicrous. Look, we all ‘know’ what pinot grigio tastes like. But do we? No, we don’t. Not, that is, until you’ve tried proper grigio from Veneto or Australia’s unofficial home of the variety, King Valley. You get properly flavoursome Nashi pear, stone fruits and citrus, real minerality and extra fine texture without any artificial acidity. But you don’t really know what that feels like until you taste it. So do yourself a favour. It’s time for some spontaneous and undirected playfulness. It’s Ludic time.

It’s hard to find single vineyard gris, grown at altitude, that looks and tastes quite this good. It’s a lot to ask, but this one’s come up trumps. It’s not unlike a modern chardy, textural and poised, but with the all the freshness of youth. The fruit, however, is Alsace all over, with pears, apple and buttercream frosting. Most of this was barrel-fermented, then aged in barriques for a few months, before being blended back with fresh stainless-steel housed juice. The labour pays off in gorgeous balance of creamy richness and crisp minerality. Definitely look for spicy food to do it full justice.

Royal Hobart Wine Show 2018

So this featured among some rosé and riesling at our park hang at lunch time (which also involved some very good sandwiches and ‘salads’ aka meat bowls with token greens). A clear winner. While some of us wouldn’t consider grigio our go-to variety, but you can be sure we’ll be going to this one many a time in the near future. Passionfruit is definitely a feature - debatable whether it’s passionfruit or banana passionfruit, you can decide that one. Fresh, a bit tropical and slightly herbaceous, but classic lemon and green apple cut some clean shapes, too. A wine that’s as good cold as it is warm, which is important for park hangs. Consummately balance, and dangerously consumable.

This Hills grigio is star-bright in the glass and as clean as Swarovski crystal. You’d be hard pressed to find a wine that offers more dangerously easy drinking. It’s like biting into a crunchy green apple, fresh out of the fridge, on a hot day. Unlike oaky, aged, textural wines, there’s nothing to hide behind here. Their job isn’t complicated, but they have to get it spot on. Flavoursome, never tiresome, it’s simple, fun and extremely delicious.
