Grenache Blanc Tasting Trio
- Mixed
- Various
For the first time ever, we’ve put together a tasting pack dedicated to under-appreciated and over-delivering Mediterranean variety grenache blanc. Originating in Spain, and flourishing in both France and Spain, it’s a grape with character, and then some. Lovers of bold and rich whites that pair perfectly with food - this pack’s got your name on it.
Each pack includes ONE of the following:

- Grenache Blanc

This is the flagship wine for Herència Altés, one of the leading producers in Spain’s Terra Alta region, which is famous for garnatxa blanca (grenache blanc). It is from their oldest vineyard, ‘La Serra’, which sits at a lofty 420m above sea level and is meticulously cared for and certified organic. It has the richness you’d expect from grenache blanc, with persistent acid from the higher altitude. Soil-wise it is limestone and sandy clay with the limestone is shining though via a nervy tension from start to finish. There is a touch of oak, integrated with generous fruit - melon, lemon curd, grapefruit - and highlights of fennel seed and aniseed. Decanter magazine gave the 2017 vintage of this wine 96 points. We’re not waiting for the new scores to be published, we hold firm conviction that this is a very fine wine.

Donovan Rall is some sort of South African wine sorcerer. Everything he touches turns to delicious. This straight grenache blanc was vinified mostly in concrete egg, with the rest going into amphorae, made with the utmost attention to detail. The nose is bright with lemon and fragrant herbs. The palate is light, tight and concentrated, with the low alcohol level leaving more room for flavour. Tangy fruit gets catapulted by a spunky acidity before finishing with a delightful savoury edge.

Another remarkable wine for Herència Altés, one of the leading producers in Spain’s Terra Alta region - garnatxa blanca (grenache blanc) from the ‘Benufet’ vineyard, which has 100+ year old vines, all meticulously cared for and certified organic. Benufet shows the richer side of grenache blanc, which they call ‘an intense and mouth filling sensation’ and they are not wrong. My notes from this vintage read ‘rich and spicy, super-powerful and wonderful with food’. There is a freshness to the wine from the high altitude and layers and layers of fruit and minerality, wrapped up in a wonderful texture. Anyone who likes Alsace pinot gris or powerful Etna whites will love this wine.
