Why do we love this case?

We’re here for a FUN TIME and not a long time. Leave your monocle in its case and your notebook in your pocket. These are not wines for haughty analysis and intellectual appraisal. That’s not to say they’re short on quality or complexity – far from it! But to sit there alone while pondering these would be missing the point. They’re built for fun, for fabulous feeds with friends, for big belly-laughs in the best of company. And wherever these wines are, fun times are never far. Cheers to that, mofo!

Orange is the New Wine? Yes indeed! We’re not talking Orange, NSW here - we are talking white wine made like red - skin-contact white wine that results in a textural wine with an amber hue. This wine, made from muscat and sauvignon spent 14 days on skins and an approachable example of the style. The nose is bursting with floral and citrus notes, along with a delightful peachiness. It’s a medium-bodied wine with light grip and a dry, floral finish. The place for this wine is a dinner party, where you get to discover just how well this textural and savoury style can work with food.

Halliday Wine Companion
Boutique Producer

Andrew Miller, head honcho and winemaker of Artis wines first fell in love with grüner after spending time in Austria with Roman Horvath MW and tasting at Domäne Wachau. It was logical for him to look to the Adelaide Hills for this wine, as the variety is suited to the cool, high altitude region. The wine - it's fantastic! Think white peach, pear and white pepper, with the freshness of a fridge-fresh iceberg lettuce and the minerality of a very expensive spa. Beyond versatile, this is a wine for any, and all, pairings.

This tasty little chardonnay is likely to be just what the doctor ordered with stone fruit and nice leesy notes on those nose, plus florals and a hint of grapefruit. It's a medium-bodied and versatile wine with a long savoury finish. More leesy notes and some perfectly baked pear on the palate make me think of roast chicken, roast potatoes and salads aplenty!

French Import

Domaine Gayda started as a staging post for weary travellers and their horses all the way back in 1749. In 2004, the property was converted into a winery, accommodation and restaurant. They source grapes from throughout the Languedoc region to make wines in both traditional and modern styles. This one is a funky little blend of the so very French grapes macabeu (75%) and muscat d’Alexandrie (25%). It’s bright, clean and fresh with a nose of honey and flowers and a palate of apricots and peaches. Chill it down, head to the park or beach and have a picnic. This is that kinda wine.

We love Eden producer Brothers At War and it seems that James Halliday does too - giving them 99 points on their 2018 singe vineyard grenache! Though this riesling is yet to be rated, but we are sure James will love it as much as we do, for its vibrant fruit, mineral purity and brilliant length. There's classic bright citrus, floral notes and driving acid. Well made by a producer to keep your eye on.

Spanish Import

Albariño is synonymous with Rias Baixas, in the cold green province of Galicia, still Spain, just above Portugal. It is a wine defined by the Atlantic. The vineyards it grows in are shaped by cooling sea breezes, with enough sun to get the berries perfectly ripe. The flavour, too, speaks of the sea. This is slatey and creamy, like succulent shellfish, with a delightful salinity. A squeeze of citrus keeps everything fresh and lively, while sunny peachy flavours flesh out the palate for a smooth, round finish. It’s beyond perfect with seafood, and a quintessential food wine, that is also dangerously drinkable on it’s own. Delicious!
