Finca de la Rica are some of the nicest guys in the wine industry. You don’t go a minute with them without wine in your glass, food on your plate and a good chat, and this is top-notch Rioja. You can tell just by looking at it. It looks somehow livelier in the glass, more vital and intense. Tempranillo and garnacha make up the mix here (90/10%), singing of juicy cherries and plums. Oak treatment comprises of a 70-30 French-American split, giving darker toasty notes and a background coconuty hint. The wine is deep and complex, but also fun and never too imposing. For fans of the 2016, this new vintage is a touch more concentrated, as it contains declassified barrels of some of their top sites.

This malbec is sourced from the Fazzio vineyard for this wine comes from more recent plantings on the land. Half of the wine spends time in second use French oak with the remaining portion resting in tank to preserve the brightness of the fruit. The nose is vibrant and bursting with cherries and plums before giving way to more floral notes such as violets and roses. The palate carries both chocolate and vanilla, along with a nice spicy complexity and bold tannin structure.

French Import

From ‘Les Dissedents’ range of Maison Ventenac, this 100% grenache is called Le Paria (the outcast). It’s the second vintage of a wine that we just adore! This references the Rhône variety being planted in Languedoc-Roussillon, where the producer believes that it thrives. Weighing in at a perfect 13%, the wine is light-bodied, vibrant and full of life. No oak was used in the wine and the clarity of fruit is the result of this decision. Raspberries mingle with cloves and sour cherries with mineral notes. According to the producer, “these wines are uncompromising, chiselled, precise and direct.” We agree and can’t get enough!

Is there anything more fun than a Jester? I think not! Likewise, is there a producer from McLaren more solid than Mitolo? Doubt it. Their 2018 Jester shiraz ticks all the boxes of juicy fruit, vibrant spice and just enough tannin.

Ahh, the Old Man syrah. The deep and rich nose suggests power on the palate and that’s what you get - but a cool-climate, elegant version of power that lets you drink glass after glass. Classic Eden Valley, dark chocolate and blueberry compote, laced with good vanilla beans. Follows through on the palate with loads of black fruit, some red fruit to back it up, flinty and graphitey. Savoury tannins and wonderful balance, with plush fruit over the top of everything. Brothers at War are riding high on the new wave of Barossa and Eden Valley producers who are making wine with food in mind. I might be making food with wine in mind, though. This wine, for the near future.

Wine Front
Adelaide Hills Bushfire Fundraiser

This wine, according to the makers, is “paying tribute to the industry and a celebration of community, 21 winemakers in the Adelaide Hills Wine Region have come together to create the Hills Appeal Wine, a 2019 syrah meunier, with all proceeds going back into the bushfire damaged region.” We are very glad to get on board and show our support for a region that we love, and their winemakers and grape growers. The participating wineries include some of the region’s best - Shaw + Smith and Sidewood Estate to name a couple. It’s syrah with a splash of meunier and a sprinkle of a couple of other grapes. It’s dark and broody on the nose, as you’d expect from a classic Hills syrah - dark berries sit with herbs and a savoury finish. It’s medium-bodied, but concentrated and spicy. Drink now or over the next 5-7 years.
