The flavour is typical Coonawarra shiraz, with dense blueberries and blackberries, chocolate and rhubarb, with just a breath of eucalypt. But it’s also much more fun than your bog-standard wine. The tannins are almost powdery and very approachable. The palate is framed by fine spices and the whole package is deliciously enjoyable. Look after your poor car - buy this instead.

Mofo Fave Producer

Meet the Pájaro Rojo, or Red Bird, the light, bright mencía made by superstars Losada. This is from the cool region of Bierzo in the north west of Spain, famous for their medium-bodied and hyper-perfumed wines that range from playful to powerful. This one is at the playful end of the spectrum, but made by one of the region’s best - so no simple wine. If you are unfamiliar with the grape of region, imagine that this is Spain’s answer to Beaujolais. Bright, energetic fruity fun, with a soft and immensely satisfying finish. Mencía is a grape imbued with wondrously heady florals and bright summer berries, but a smidge more richness on the palate to back it up. If you’re fond of the flavours in gamay or a super-light grenache, this is a wine made for you.

This is refosco dal peduncolo, a variety native to Veneto, that has remained relatively obscure here in Australia. For lovers of pinot noir and nebbiolo though, this is definitely one to know. The wine is light in body, floral on the nose with voilet and iris, and follows through with plum, sour cherry, blackberry, flintiness and undergrowth on the palate. The tannins are soft and round, and a fresh minerality drives through to the finish. This is under-the-radar deliciousness here that will certainly impress fans of lighter reds.

Celler Masroig (pronounced ‘ce-yeah ma-rosh’) is a co-op from one of Montsant’s most special spots and is considered among the region’s best producers. The community work together to craft excellent wines across local varieties - in this case, 100% carignan. It’s from steep, south-facing slopes, with hot days and cold nights making the grapes strong. This is a firm and ripe wine with wonderful plum, prune and herbaceousness, strung together by fine acidity, and food-friendly drying tannin. If you ever get to the area, a stop at the cellar door is a must, where their Decanter-awarded wines sit next to their refill-your-own barrels of tinto and blanco.

Nero d’Avola is without a doubt one of the jewels in the Sicilian winemaking crown. Light to medium bodied, bright, fresh and fruity, it’s laden with dark berries and spine-tingling spices. Sicily’s warm climate is tempered by both the Mediterranean Sea and the volcanic elevation, ensuring it never gets too hot and the grapes retain a lovely acidity. It’s absurdly easy-drinking. We warn you, a glass of this often spills over into a long, languorous antipasto lunch on a sun-drenched terrace. You may never get any work done again, but who cares when ‘la vita è così bella’?
