Why do we love this case?

This lineup of six reds from Victoria and SA have the theme of ‘delicious smashability’. They’re all from makers who are pushing the boundaries, and all in slightly different directions, and that’s what makes them so interesting. Here’s a mixed six to celebrate the variety that is found in red wine, from the classic, shiraz, to the lesser known cabernet franc and tempranillo.

Each case contains one bottle of these six wines:

We reckon this is the best producer that you have never heard about. Adelaide Hills syrah made with a Franco-Spanish accent, focusing on texture, nuance and poise. No lead-heavy palate heft here. It’s spritely berries, crackles of pepper, aromatic wafts of new French oak and a fizzle of frisky tannin to keep you on your toes. This’ll age better than George Clooney, no doubt.

5 red star Halliday rated winery

My tasting notes for this beauty consisted of “My kind of smashable.” Eucalypt, red licorice, raspberries, red cherries, strawberries, crunchy herbaceousness and white pepper. It’s a powerhouse of flavour in a lithe and lively body. Zippy, refreshing acidity makes for a party on the palate and all the delicious nuances of texture and complexity light up your tastebuds like a disco ball. This is Penley at their most fun. This is the kind of wine that anyone could drink time and time again and never get bored.

Signature Wines make modern wines from single vineyard sites in the cooler nooks of the Adelaide Hills, the coordinates for which you can find printed on their labels. This light to medium-bodied tempranillo has ‘approachable’ written all over it and is simply hard not to enjoy. Herbal and juicy on the nose with licks of mysterious earthen cacao and cola pair with lifted bright cherries and licorice.

Sanglier bring us their take on a southwest French blend, a style where each grape supports the others to make a balanced and drinkable wine. In this case it’s 55% McLaren Vale grenache, 30% Clare Valley shiraz and 15% Adelaide Hills tannat. They call it a GST. Vibrancy and freshness are the themes of this wine. Lots of raspberry and spice on the nose and on the palate it’s medium bodied and crunchy. Crunchy what you may ask? Crunchy berries and plums from the grenache! The tannat brings tannin, a hallmark of the variety and shiraz brings spice. It’s a Euro-inspired version of of the Classic Dry Red and very good indeed.

There is truth to the saying that the simple things in life are often the best. And that’s the approach with the Bress Unplucked - made for simple enjoyment. No oak. No need for cellaring. Made to drink now. So there’s nothing to ponder but the fruit-driven wine in front of you. It’s berry good (pun intended) and made to be gluggable with pizza, pasta and similar Mediterranean inspired dishes. Don’t think. just drink. And chat. And laugh.

Vegan Friendly

Arthur Bruce Chalmers (THE Chalmers) imported a selection of grapevine cultivars from around the world to Australia. Among those were six clones of malbec, from the very best vineyards of Mendoza. Those clones made these grapes that made this wine. The warm conditions in Heathcote suit malbec down to the ground. It makes a plush, deep-purple coloured wine, rich in blueberries, cherries, violets and peppery spice. Malbec is classic steak wine, and this one has all the tannins you’ll need, both for hearty food now and for ageing well for years. It’s unfined and unfiltered, so it’s perfectly vegan-friendly too. You might get some side-eyes as you tuck into your rib-eye next to your vego mates, though.
