This is a master producer looking beyond the confines of tradition and labelling, to make the best possible wine he can. We'll let the Wine Advocate's review do the talking: “It’s silky and long, a pure delight to drink for its sheer deliciousness and hedonism. Like the other limited-edition wines from Usseglio, only 3,000 bottles were produced”.

Domaine Saint Préfert Beatus Ille Côtes du Rhône 2020
Allspice
Blackberry
Plum
Medium-bodied

Concentrated

This Côtes du Rhône comes from Domaine Saint-Préfert, one of the region’s truly cult producers. They just celebrated their 102nd anniversary this year with another incredible release of wines that start in the vineyard. The soils are stony, porous and filtering, allowing the vines to root deeply in clay. With such extreme temperatures in the Rhône, these deep roots are vital to accessing water, resulting in grapes of immense intensity and richness. Saint-Préfert’s range of Châteauneuf-du-Pape can get quite pricey, so this wine is a great opportunity to get your hands on something from one of the more exciting wineries in France at the moment.

As Saint-Émilion’s next door neighbour, Castillon offers value that is almost unparalleled in Bordeaux. Cheateau Le Rey sits on a continuation of the famed limestone-clay terroir, meaning the wines are able to put terroir expression first, and the hefty pricetag last. Les Argileuses is all about the purity of fruit, taking small parcels off the vine and handling them individually to draw out the full potential of each batch. Want to hear something truly unique about this wine? It sees no oak. It’s a bit of a rebelious child in that way. The choice has paid off with a strikingly fresh style, like eating juicy black fruits in summertime, a little bit of licorice and pretty florals. The merlot brings this sumptuous silkiness, while the cabernet franc endeavours to make it ever so slightly more serious. At the end of the day, you can be as serious about it as you like- we won’t judge.

Julien Schaal Kaleïdoscope Pinot Noir 2020
Allspice
Strawberry
Minerally
Medium-bodied

Concentrated

Whether it be for his outstanding Alsace rieslings, mind boggling Walker Bay reds, we’re big fans of Julien Schaal. If you’ve ever been lucky to get yourself a bottle of Schaal’s wines, we’ll bet its been a memorable experience. This time, we decided to pivot slightly and do something we haven’t done before. That’s right, pinot noir from Alsace. As the only red wine allowed in the region, they sure do it well. Just south of Colmar, Julien has selected vineyards that offer the best growing potential for this fickle variety. Organically grown, and with a long season on the vines, the fruit that ends up in the glass is a few steps above the rest. You’ll get a mix of red cherries and blackberry on the nose, but the palate shows great depth with some spice and vanilla. We’re making the call, Alsace pinot is the next big thing.

La Borie Cinsault 2019
Allspice
Cloves
Cherry
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated

Château La Borie, one of the few domaines in Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the Château name, was built in the 17th century. Since then, it has passed through several families before coming under the care of the Knapp family today. Situated ten kilometres from the left bank of the Rhône river, the winery produces four wines from its 75 hectares of vines. This is a fun and fresh example of cinsault, one of the few wines the Knapps have heroed in a single variety wine. Picked younger in early September and aged in tank, you’ll see vibrant cherry and red fruits charge through the front palate, before mellowing out with fresh clove and touches of cured meat. Superbly smashable, outrageously affordable Rhône red.
