Château La Borie, one of the few domains in Côtes-du-Rhône bearing the name Château, was built in the 17th century. Since then, it has passed through several families and is under the care of the Margnat family today. Situated ten kilometres from the left bank of the Rhône river, the winery produces four wines from its 75 hectares of vines. La Borie’s Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a blend of syrah, grenache and mourvèdre sourced from vines over clay and stone. Macerated dark fruits drive the palate of the wine with minerality, spice and chocolate as complements. This is one that’s ready to go now but has nearly a decade of life if you choose to let it age.

Château Haut-Rieuflaget has been converting their vineyards to organic farming for the past few years and the payoff seems immediate. This merlot-dominant blend spends a year in underground vats, softening up and ageing gracefully before bottling. It shows off plum, raspberry, baking spices, cocoa and earthy notes upon tasting with a robust tannin structure that begs for protein on the plate. It’ll be worth it to plan a little ahead and let some air into the bottle (or simply decant if you’ve got the gear) before drinking.

From ‘Les Dissedents’ range of Maison Ventenac, this 100% grenache is called Le Paria (the outcast). It’s the second vintage of a wine that we just adore! This references the Rhône variety being planted in Languedoc-Roussillon, where the producer believes that it thrives. Weighing in at a perfect 13%, the wine is light-bodied, vibrant and full of life. No oak was used in the wine and the clarity of fruit is the result of this decision. Raspberries mingle with cloves and sour cherries with mineral notes. According to the producer, “these wines are uncompromising, chiselled, precise and direct.” We agree and can’t get enough!

Few wines are as unabashedly, beautifully, boisterously fun as the Beaujolais. This is absolutely no exception. But don’t be fooled by the ‘Villages’ designation. While wines from this tier of the region can be fantastic, this one tends toward exceptional. The vineyards are hilly, and of higher altitude than even the Brouilly cru. That height gives cooler nights, greater complexity, driving acidity and plenty of daytime sunshine to boot. Look for classic gamay notes: jubilant berries, potting soil, slatey minerality and lighter, quaffable body. This is beyond perfect with roast turkey, though chicken will do just fine, too. Otherwise, it is THE red picnic wine - think terrine, cold cuts, cheeses and sunshine.

If you are looking for a mid-week, light on its feet, bright and full-of-fruit wine - this is the one for you. From high altitude organic vineyards and a mix of soils, this one is pure pinot goodness - fresh from the 2020 vintage, onto a ship and into your mouth! Only the tiniest smidge of oak was used in the winemaking process, so the fruit is the star - ripe strawberries, puckering red currants and a touch of spice. Not a wine to overthink, but a wine to simply enjoy.

Château Moulin is located in the commune Entre-Deux-Mers in St Antoine du Queyre, just outside of the city of Bordeaux. They grow mostly merlot, but have small planting of cabernet sauvignon. The vineyard site is 30 years old and located on limestone-clay soil, which creates ideal conditions for growing merlot. The winery headed Frederic Petit, a young farmer making modern and approachable wines. This is a powerful style of Bordeaux, that also retains elegance and finesse. On the palate you will find rich ripe plum, blackcurrant, ripe cherries, showcasing subtle cedar notes, with chalky tannin. We recommend settling in with some classic steak and frites, a bottle of this and your favourite movie. Voila! Match made in heaven.
