This is Domaine Charton's Bourgogne-level pinot noir, made from a collection of sites and vinified with around 30% new oak and aged for just under a year. According to wine critic Robert Parker, they make “a range of generous, gourmand red Mercurey bottlings that display melting tannins and an abundance of juicy fruit.” This wine is a great place to start in exploring their range and also a good beginners step into red Burgundy.

Definitely grenache dominant with warm raspberry coulis, scorched summer earth and spice. But there’s a more brooding background of tar, molasses and liquorice from the syrah, and equal parts of cinsault and mourvèdre. The warm minerality reflects the vineyard’s rocky nature and warm Mediterannean summers. It’s a beauty - and a beast.

Domaine de la Grosse-Pierre is a small producer making excellent gamay-based wines in France’s Beaujolais region. With access to old vines on granite soils, this is truely a case of the wines being made in the vineyard. In the winery, they practice a minimal intervention philosophy, which results in pure-fruited. vibrant and lively wines. It was the Jancis Robinson wine of the week earlier this year and Julia Harding’s review below tells you all about this wonderful wine. And we trust Julia, she’s a Master of Wine.

Nostre Païs is an incredible expression of an organic and biodynamic grenache blend from Costières de Nîmes. It’s about half grenache with the additions of syrah, mourvèdre, carignan and cinsault. Domaine Gassier’s wine was listed in Jeb Dunnuck’s Top 100 reds of the year and for good reason. It’s pure of fruit, complex and smooth as silk. On the nose you’ll find blackberries and black cherries along with hints of hot stones. Once on the palate, the expression continues with cacao, dried herbs and graphite. The tannins are fine, making the wine ready to drink following a bit of aeration. Perfect for pairing, this wine will go with an assortment of cheeses, meats and earthy vegetables.

Château Beauvillage makes one wine and one wine only. They’ve been at it this way since 1925. Good thing they are so skilled at it. Year after year, it delivers its distinctive character. The winemaker adapts the fermentation process to the specific vintage conditions, but always keeping the blend the same - 55% merlot and 45% cabernet sauvignon. The 2018 edition saw 12 months in toasted French oak before bottling. It’s wonderfully complex and aromatic with ripe fruit notes of cherry and plum with hints of cedar, mocha and smoke behind the scenes. The tannins are silky and lead to a lingering finish. This is a wine of richness and structure, something both hedonistic and serious at the same time.

Drink a bottle, plant a tree. Here’s one to enjoy on the palate and the spirit. Florian Andre, the winemaker, will plant a tree for every bottle sold. Now that’s reason to celebrate with a glass! The wine itself is the classic GSM blend from the Rhone Valley, sourced from an organic, old vine vineyard and put through minimal work in the winery to keep it as close to natural as possible. The results are a bright and focused red laden with dark fruits, lifted spice and some earthy undertones. Enjoy the wine and do some good in the process!
