Why do we love this case?

Tell you what, it wasn’t a bad start to the day. Three of the finest dessert-style rieslings the world has to offer, and someone even brought the blue cheese. And when you think about the incredible risk and manual labour that go into these wines, it’s flabbergasting. They’re one of those wines that easily commands the extra money asked. To start with, the risk in the vineyard is great - you might get the right type of rot (‘Noble Rot’, or botrytis cinerea) in the vineyard, or it might all go pear-shaped and write off the whole vintage. Luckily, 2017 provided the goods. Then there’s the labour. These wines aren’t just hand-picked. In the case of the trockenbeerenauslese, they even hand-select individual berries! That’s how you get pretty much perfect scores, mofos. And the intensified, semi-dried grapes are painstakingly pressed for minuscule yields of rare, golden liquid.

There are three wines, ranging from the medium-sweet late harvest (Auslese style) through to the intensely sweet and incredibly complex Trockenbeerenauslese style. This is a special chance to try these wines. We knew you’d want two of each, so we’ve doubled them down into one incredible mixed six.

Here’s a little on each of the three wines (remember, you get TWO 375ml bottles of each):

Golden delicious, lime marmalade, fresh pineapple, wholemeal toast and butter. Incredible intensity, super clean but so rounded and unctuous, almost briney, with tropical fruit and cleansing acidity. Long, long, long.

Like the auslese, with its lime, grapefruit marmalade and golden delicious, but more from both ends of the spectrum: green apple this time versus golden; but toffee too, an almost smokey intensity and at least twice the intensity of aromas. The palate is so intense, so rich and so round without being cloying or there being any hint of funk. This is super impressive stuff.

The colour is intense green-gold. All the tropical, citrus and apple you could ask for, but laid together with loads of peach (both yellow and white, ripe and dried), raisins and freshly roasted coffee, plus a bunch of spices - dried cinnamon, cocoa, tobacco. The palate is an ‘oh wow, holy shitballs’ kinda moment. Eddie said for him, the Beerenauslese was the one because it’s a bit more accessible, but for hedonismbots like me (‘I regret NOTHING!’) it has to be this. Intensely sweet of course, but balanced effortlessly by superfine acidity, and everything else is cranked to 11 too: flavour for days, savoury saltiness, such silky roundness. And importantly, nothing out of place.
