Why do we love this case?

Better than a face off between Travolta and Cage, this is a battle of wine worlds. New vs Old, to be exact. Stepping into the ring for the newbies is the indomitable McLaren Vale, classic Coonawarra and killer King Valley. Representing the older generation is the incomparable Bordeaux, top notch Tuscany and righteous Rhone. Who shall win? Your palate decides.

Each case contains two bottles of each of the following:

Duca di Saragnano, you’ve done it again. Two vintages in a row of the Sir Passo IGT have scored 98 points and we’re stoked for another crack at this primo vino. An 80/20 blend of sangiovese and merlot, it’s a velvety, versatile juice that does equally well on its own or with food. Conceived by the producer “as an attempt to surprise and delight with new flavours, tastes and aromas”, this toscana is all about intense, ripe fruits, primarily red and black cherries. You know the deal with sangio: pair it with your Italian favourite. Pasta and pizza reign supreme, just make sure you have lashings of tomato sauce and lashings of this ‘16 juice to complement it.

French import

Domaine Courtois are a family-owned estate now headed by Pascal and Richard, who took over from their father Claude (so bloody French), and it seems the future is in very decent hands. This blend of grenache and syrah is repping an amazingly high review for its price. There’s a cheeky little dash of mourvèdre in there too and it really is cracking, cracking booze, rated 91 points by Robert Parker. Lots of dark berry fruits accompany soft tannins and a good amount of acidity. It is, as Parker says, simply a “a wine of good structure with good Southern Rhône characters.”

3 s - Concours General Agricole Paris

Chateau Cazeau is built on the site of a feudal castle originally owned by King Charles VIII. You’d be forgiven, therefore, for assuming that this Bordeaux will break the bank, a drop reserved only for royalty. Truth is, this juicy drop is selling for under a tenner so how about a round of applause and a big merçi to our buyer John for importing it? With three gold medals and a bunch of very ripe, red fruits, this medium-bodied red is a little bit concentrated and a whole bit opulent. Break bread, pour out a glass and let the long, toasty finish bid you au revoir on the way out with a kiss on both cheeks.

“We’ve got a more modern style of winemaking here, it’s a fresh, full-bodied, easy drinking style of GSM. While I can’t tell you too much about this producer, what I can say is this wine comes from very select sites in the Vale. “If you’re having a house party, or have friends coming over, a case of GSM is always a good one to have. So it’s great for your shiraz drinkers, it’s great for your merlot drinkers, you might even be able to twist your pinot drinkers arms into having a gulp of this.” - Eddie, The Wine Guy

Penley cabernet is consistently...de-penley-able? Probably not the best pun, but still one of the better, most consistent cabernets to come through our doors which is why we’ve had the last four vintages in. They’re an iconic, 5 star producer crafting cabernet in Coonawarra and this ‘16 vintage is packed with dark cherry and chocolate notes, a dinner-ready drop any night of the week.

I just LOVE the guys behind this wine, they’re so consistent. Honestly, every single wine I’ve had from them, to this date, has been such good quality and so delicious. This particular wine is called Nuovo Rosso, ‘nuovo’ meaning ‘new’ (what, crazy) and ‘rosso’ means ‘blend’. This is going to be a really good summer drink, like really good. Because none of us need a big, bold, thick shiraz to keep us warm anymore. - Maddie, Wine Broker
