In Puglia, the heel of the boot that is Italy, primitivo is arguably the leading red grape. Here, primitivo tends toward rich, full-bodied and dark in fruit (think blackberries, figs and blueberries). This one from La Bollina takes that profile a bit further with some extra complexity to the tune of plum, cherry, rosemary and vanilla. It’s big, bold and luscious, making it the perfect Italian counterpart to our rich South Aussie shiraz.

When the Tuscan winemakers decided to blend in cabernet and merlot with their sangiovese, minds were blown and the Supertuscan was born. And it worked a charm. This one is half sangio and a quarter each cab and merlot. It’s given six months in older oak to build structure yet still let the fruit sing. Look for cherries, raspberries, chocolate and a touch of vanillin. And at this price with a 98 point review, this is a Supertuscan at a super deal!

This is your weekday Rioja - younger, fresher and easier than its aged counterparts and all the better for it. It’s a blend of tempranillo, with a douse of grenache and graciano. All the grapes coming together to make a very tasty wine that hits notes and harmonies you would never expect. There’s cherry and licorice on the nose, followed by ripe plum, sour cherry and a touch of cola on the palate. Medium-bodied and just purely delicious, with or without food.

Bodegas Olivares are a family-run winery in the sunny region of Jumilla in the south-east of Spain that we’re always proud to work with. This is a rework of the popular GSM, with the local monastrell (or ‘mataro’ to Aussies) taking the lead role to make an MGS. The wine has sun-drenched summer fruit with a fresh, breezy acidity from the high altitude in which it’s grown. With sweet, swarthy berries and an exotically spiced finish, we can attest that it’s bloody hard to turn down a second (or third) glass.
