Trisole Nero d'Avola 2020
Allspice
Earthy
Raspberry
Medium-bodied
Lively
Elegant

Trisole translates to ‘three suns’ in English, a reference to the aformentioned sun-kissed island of Sicily that is surrounded by three seas. This nero is sourced from vineyards on the western side of the island surrounding the city of Marsala. Despite its deep, dark colour and firm structure, the wine is quite elegant with red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, hints of allspice and undergrowth, and a long, grippy finish that make it the perfect accompaniment to your homemade pasta alla Norma.

2016 was a banger year across the Southern Rhône. There are great reds up and down the scale in terms of appellation and price. This here is a great example of that. So much fruit, so much palate weight, so much smoothness. Just have a look at the review below from Wine Advocate. They’re clearly big fans of this Côtes du Rhône and recognise the incredible value within.

This is a powerful style of Bordeaux, that also retains elegance and finesse. On the palate you will find rich ripe plum, blackcurrant, ripe cherries, showcasing subtle cedar notes, with chalky tannin. We recommend settling in with some classic steak and frites, a bottle of this and your favourite movie. Voila! Match made in heaven.

Good things take time, or at least that’s the theory in Spain - particularly when it comes to the world-famous wines from the Rioja region. In the case of this tempranillo-dominant red from Marqués del Silvo - it’s a Crianza level - which means it has spent a minimum of 24 month ageing (in bottle and barrel) before release. This time allows the wine and the oak to integrate and some of the tannins to smooth out. Oak presence remains on both the nose and the palate, but is nestled into cherry fruit and licorice spice. The wine is medium-bodied and a great example of the Crianza style from an accessible producer.

Bright and crunchy, this is the cheeky upstart Chianti that could. In fact, it totally knows it can, too. Loads of red cherry and plum, juicy and lifted. This is on the lighter side for a Chianti, and sings all the right tunes: a little chalkiness, fruit fullness and the right amount of indifferent, upstart attitude. But unlike that adorable train from the classic children’s story, this is for adults only.

Mofo Fave Producer

Bodegas Olivares are a family-run winery in the sunny region of Jumilla in the south-east of Spain that we’re always proud to work with. We’ve always received some of our best value wines from them, vintage after vintage. This is a rework of the popular GSM, with the local monastrell (or ‘mataro’ to Aussies) taking the lead role to make an MGS. The wine has sun-drenched summer fruit with a fresh, breezy acidity from the high altitude in which it’s grown. With sweet, swarthy berries and an exotically spiced finish, we can attest that it’s bloody hard to turn down a second (or third) glass.
