Staff Picks

There are many who believe that you need to spend big to find quality in Burgundy. And then there are wines like this that give the two-finger salute to the rules and the pecking order. This beauty is definitely punching above its weight, with bright berry fruit and cherry slice aromas lying on a bed of carob. It’s bright and bouncy. Playful and fresh. Nervy and delicious. And it’s so versatile with dinner. Enjoy with a provincial inspired roast chicken with lemon, rosemary, garlic and black pepper. Step it up with a roll of roast pork. Or with your favourite Thai noodles. You can’t go wrong!

Straight from the Rhône Valley comes this spicy mix of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre. Each grape contributing its own magic to make a ripe and juicy red-berried, medium-bodied bottle of delicious vin rouge. Syrah gives attractive plum and cherry aromatics and a finely polished tannic structure, while the grenache leads with a juicy ripeness and generous texture, and mourvèdre chimes in with earthy and subtle meaty notes. Classic, dry, vin rouge.

Luca Maroni
Italian Import

In the heel of the boot that is Italy (Puglia for those beholden to actual names), primitivo is arguably the leading red grape. You might already know that it’s genetically identical to zinfandel, California’s famous wine. It’s a grape that adapts well to a variety of terroirs, showing something different depending on the origin. In Puglia, primitivo tends toward rich, full-bodied and dark in fruit (think blackberries, figs and blueberries). This one from La Bollina takes that profile a bit further with some extra complexity to the tune of plum, cherry, rosemary and vanilla. It’s big, bold and luscious, making it the perfect Italian counterpart to our rich South Aussie shiraz.

When the Tuscan winemakers decided to blend in cabernet and merlot with their sangiovese, minds were blown and the Supertuscan was born. Sounds like a superhero origin story, I know. But it’s really the tale of a very traditional wine region doing something entirely unconventional. And it worked a charm. This one is half sangio and a quarter each cab and merlot. It’s given six months in older oak to build structure yet still let the fruit sing. Look for cherries, raspberries, chocolate and a touch of vanillin.

This is an early-released wine in the ‘joven’ style from Bodegas Forcada in Rioja, who specialise in old vine tempranillo and grenache. Bristling with jubilant cherries and sizzling with exotic spices, it’s perfect for seasoning your snags with every mouthful. 90% tempranillo, filled out with a few splashes of grenache for a bit of plumpness to the palate. Enjoy freely, pour liberally, and laugh heartily!

Maison Ventenac Eve Syrah 2020
Allspice

Black Cherry

We’ve got a bit of a producer crush on Maison Ventenac and in fact, we’re thinking of recruiting them as long-distance, freelance copywriters. Here’s what they had to say about their Eve syrah: “Pep and freshness. Lovers of dense, woody, over-ripe Syrahs, move on. Here, it’s all about fresh spices, tension and rectitude. Just like Eve, fresh, lively and dynamic. This vintage matches these qualities exactly. Best served young, for its juice and fruitiness.” We say this young French beauty is ready to go - bright and juicy with the serious drinkability we see in all of their wines. According to Vinomofo’s Head of Buying John Clark: “This is soft, spicy syrah, just GREAT drinking wine!”
