Why do we love this case?

We sent our secret agents (aka Mofo Buyers) to Europe to collect the best value reds they could find out of Spain, France and Italy that they’d want at least three cases per year of in their cellars. As with all wines, we only sell the wines we love. So here’s the result, six delectable reds, twice.

To be clear, each case contains two bottles of each of the following:

Sensi Mantello Tuscany Shiraz Blend 2014

Luca Maroni

The Mantello is a blend of sangiovese-shiraz, the tastiest kind of alliteration we know. Aged in oak and presenting a balance of spice, vanilla and blackberries, this velvety Tuscan vino has a long history of picking up points and pleasing palates. A modern take on an old world style, the blend is pure Sensi in that it pushes the boundaries and sits outside the conventional styles of the region. We’ve been getting this full-bodied wine in for a few years now and the ‘14 follows in the footsteps of its older siblings, with 97 points from Luca Maroni and over 100 years of winemaking experience under cork.

Duca Di Saragnano Toscana Rosso IGT 2016

Luca Maroni

Duca di Saragnano is a mouthful worth getting your jowls around, because we’ve been seeing some great drops from this producer, from the surprisingly good value entry level like this to the surprisingly good value top tier. It’s easier if you think of it as a him, because it translates to the Duke of Saragnano. It’s a lovable, soft and rustic but altogether plush and medium-bodied number. Love Chianti? Or even just red wine? Then welcome to the aristocracy. Meet the Duke.

Decanter
Platinum medal Decanter

This Bordeaux Supérieur hails from the Left Bank, just outside the Graves appellation, and is a fantastic red blend having just picked up 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2017. It spent 12 months in oak, and dark red fruits and blackcurrants mingle with vanilla and nutty notes, with silky, velvety tannins all the way through. It’s a great wine to add a touch of class to a special dinner without the price tag.

James Suckling
Spanish Import

This wine is made from a really interesting grape called mencia. It’s a Spanish varietal the wine geeks are getting excited over, a medium-bodied grape that’s quite earthy and savoury and bringing the fight to tempranillo and garnacha. It’s super aromatic, super rustic, and this particular example has picked up 92 points from James Suckling thanks to its juicy blueberry flavours. Drink it now and drink it all.

Best Value Trophy Wine Merchant's Top 100

Mataro, mourvedre, monastrell – whatever your preference, it’s all good booze. This Spanish monastrell comes from the Yecla region, in the east of the country, and was awarded a Best Value Trophy and a gold medal in Wine Merchant’s Top 100 awards, as well as a gold medal at the Korean Wine Challenge 2017. Red cherries rule supreme in the glass, with spices and woody notes supporting this elegant wine. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Spain runs the world of incredible value vino and nowhere is that more evident than with this award-winning, gold medal wine for under ten bucks a bottle.

Wine Advocate
French Import

Year in, year out, this grenache comes in and we’re reminded just how good it really is. The Wine Advocate nails it: “it sells for a song and way over-delivers.” Along with their 90 point nod of approval, this French import is peppery and fruity, full-bodied and rich. Easy-drinking with cherries and blackcurrants, it’s a great grenache that is dangerously good value.
