Raymond Usseglio is a biodynamic Châteauneuf-du-Pape maker with a cult following and a bit of an outlaw, and this is signature outlaw wine. He’s gone so wild and crazy with it that he can’t state the vintage on the label, so it has to be labelled Vin de France even though it’s probably all from the Rhône Valley. Put it this way: the Usseglio fam don’t bother making for the masses, and they have a 100-point rated red. So no big deal. Semantics aside, this is packed with super fresh berries - raspberry, strawberry, loganberry - plus distinctive chinotto and blood orange. There are even stone fruits on the palate. It’s lovely a fresh with medium-to-full weight, grippy and fruit-driven without being too serious or too flippant. A glorious interpretation of grenache-based red with no affectation, but will yield lots of affection.

Sam Kim
5 Stars Sam Kim

This crazy cat is at the very cutting edge of Rioja’s new wave of wonderful wines! Far from the dusty leather armchair wines most associated with the region, this is young, racy and basically decked out in go-faster stripes. It’s for a young-at-heart crowd, bright, juicy and exuberant. It’s the kind of wine that screams fun and is gonna rub off on all your guests. It tastes like a vino well above the price bracket, though deftly avoids stuffiness of any kind. Raucously red fruited, with a generous dollop of French and American oak, it’s prepped to party as soon as that cork is popped. And imagine casually serving funky new-wave Rioja, just as your house red. How f*@!ing cool are you?!

Like a good opera - this starts with a wave of deep baritone notes, finishing with a nice crescendo. Think plums, blackcurrants and maraschino cherries, lifting the tempo and intensity with violet and spicy / savoury high notes. And of course - there’s that traditional line of Italian acidity and tannin to give it some grunt. With that structure in mind, of course it can handle Italy’s cuisine; richly textured tomato-based sauces, bistecca alla fiorentina (big thick steak on the T-bone), or your favourite wood-fired pizza. Or even a simple chunk of parmesan. Splash it around. Get some air into it and enjoy.

Bright and crunchy, this is the cheeky upstart Chianti that could. In fact, it totally knows it can, too. Loads of red cherry and plum, juicy and lifted. It’s on the lighter side for a Chianti (making it perfect for summer!), and sings all the right tunes: a little chalkiness, fruit fullness and the right amount of indifferent, upstart attitude.

A wise man once told me that the magic of Bordeaux is that everyone can afford it. Even the cheapest Burgundies come at a premium, but there’s a Bordeaux for every price bracket. Sadly, I can’t remember who that wise man was, or even if I simply dreamed the interaction – but either way it’s true. We’re not talking 1er Cru Classé here, but that’s not the point either. This is genuinely delicious, characteristic and smashable Bordeaux red that’s unpretentious enough to come at a reasonable price. That’s a kind of special all of its own we reckon.

Some wines just scream fun times from the moment you meet. This is one of those. Made from an exotic blend of native Portuguese grapes we can neither spell nor pronounce, it’s like that roommate you had at uni who somehow managed to coax you out of your bed every single time. It’s super juicy, full of vibrantly ripe berries and an easy-going medium body for maximum smashability. It’s uncomplicated and unpretentious, just delicious flavour and obvious quality. It’s equally at home on the dinner table with family as being sipped from a mug while making enemies over Monopoly at a friend’s place. We defy you to not enjoy the experience.
