Why do we love this case?

This isn’t just three incredible wines, it’s twelve! But the first three make up $260 value, and the other nine are a truly delicious bonus. A bonus worth an extra $340, just quietly. Expect wines from southern France, northern Italy and southeast Spain, individually worth between $22 and $65. They’re all excellent wines, we’re all a little excited, and if you like a surprise with a classy accent, you will be too.

To be clear, you’ll get twelve bottles, headlined by the following three:

There’s something about Spanish wine that gets me all revved up. So when I read in Sommelier Magazine that “Finca Monteviejo must be counted among the best top wines in Spain”, a single drop of drool fell from my mouth to the floor and with 11 reviews awarding points ranging from 91 to 97, it’s pretty clear I’m not the only one reeling from this red-hot Rioja. Pedro Ballesteros Torres, Master of Wine, called this “a top quality Rioja with real charisma” thanks to its impressive power and an explosion of flavour. Sarah Evans, Master of Wine, raved about “a wine that is full of life and energy” with “a glassful of dark fruits; blackberries and sour cherries coating the mouth.” This is, as Pierre Mansour put it, a smoky, full-bodied Rioja that has notable structure. Berry fruits and super jammy aromas are accompanied by wood nuances like cedar to add complexity. Sarah Evans described as “dense and resonant” and complimented the length as being “hugely impressive, taking you right through onto a lift of freshness at the end.”

This is lovely stuff. Peacock tails, tar, roses, all the things. Complex. Please decant. I asked Kate for a bit more about why she loved it enough to buy it. She found Giovanni Rosso at Prowein, and started with the premium stuff. “We bought some of that, and off the back of that success, we were given access to the rest of the range,” says Kate. We're extremely proud to be giving mofos a chance to try world class wines like this one at prices never seen before. 2013 is powerful, and fruity for Barolo. We’ve spared no expense getting it here either. It’s been shipped in a refrigerated container from Europe, and is now tucked safely in our Port Melbourne warehouse. For now.

“What’s awesome about this wine is it’s a beautiful, fairly rich, getting into that full-bodied territory vino from one of Robert Park’s favourite producers in the southern Rhone. The little sub-region is Ventoux, which is just a stone’s throw from the much more expensive Châteauneuf-du-Pape. So here you’re getting incredible quality of fruit, for much, much, much more affordable prices. Fantastic for lovers of Australian shiraz or Australian grenache, that want to try something a little different. I think this one is going to please a lot of palates, and a lot of people who dig French wine. Really, really cool, we’re super excited about it around the office.” - Eddie, The Wine Guy
