Why do we love this case?

Even after many a tasting and many a trip to the vineyards of Europe, it still astounds us the variety of wine that is found in such a small area. Umbrella’d under the term ‘Old World’, the wines are characterised by old vines and generations of vintners who have crafted unique and culturally-specific wines over the centuries. This pack highlights a wide variety of reds, all unique to their corner of the continent and showing off that their region does well.

Each pack includes ONE of the following:

Organic

Nostre Païs is an incredible expression of an organic and biodynamic grenache blend from Costières de Nîmes. It’s about half grenache with the additions of syrah, mourvèdre, carignan and cinsault. Domaine Gassier’s wine was listed in Jeb Dunnuck’s Top 100 reds of the year and for good reason. It’s pure of fruit, complex and smooth as silk. On the nose you’ll find blackberries and black cherries along with hints of hot stones. Once on the palate, the expression continues with cacao, dried herbs and graphite. The tannins are fine, making the wine ready to drink following a bit of aeration. Perfect for pairing, this wine will go with an assortment of cheeses, meats and earthy vegetables.

This 2018 Chianti from the wonderful and terroir-focused producer Monte Bernardi is an absolute treat. Based in Panzano, the estate is run by the talented and meticulous Michael Schmelzer, who manages all of their vineyards using biodynamic principles (organically certified). It’s made in a traditional style of Chianti Classico - so expect a medium-bodied, fruit-driven wine with a firm structure and great length. According to the producer: “The Italian word Retromarcia means more to us than its literal translation ‘to back up’ or ‘to reverse’, it has been our aim to produce intensely typical and expressive wines from Tuscany’s historic zone – Chianti Classico, using only traditional grapes. With the name Retromarcia, we are emphasizing a return to the natural elegance and charm of Sangiovese.”

Gold Concours des Vinalies Internationales

Château Beauvillage makes one wine and one wine only. They’ve been at it this way since 1925. Good thing they are so skilled at it. Year after year, it delivers its distinctive character. The winemaker adapts the fermentation process to the specific vintage conditions, but always keeping the blend the same - 55% merlot and 45% cabernet sauvignon. The 2018 edition saw 12 months in toasted French oak before bottling. It’s wonderfully complex and aromatic with ripe fruit notes of cherry and plum with hints of cedar, mocha and smoke behind the scenes. The tannins are silky and lead to a lingering finish. This is a wine of richness and structure, something both hedonistic and serious at the same time.

Austria’s flagship red grape, blaufränkisch, graces the wine lists of the world’s top restaurants. It’s a little over medium-bodied with a noticeable spiciness that makes it sing across cuisines. This BF (yep, just made that up) is from Wellanschitz in Burgunland, an area famed for red production. The wine simply delicious, full of blackberry and plum, a little pepper and a nice finish of cleansing acidity and fine tannins. Though just a glimpse into their range of epic reds, it’s a great place to start, showing off their high altitude vineyards and vines aged up to 45 years.
