Why do we love this case?

Even after many a tasting and many a trip to the vineyards of Europe, it still astounds us the variety of wine that is found in such a small area. Umbrella’d under the term ‘Old World’, the wines are characterised by old vines and generations of vintners who have crafted unique and culturally-specific wines over the centuries. This pack highlights a wide variety of reds, all unique to their corner of the continent and showing off that their region does well.

Each pack includes ONE of the following:

16.5/20 Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com

‘Tres vielle’ indeed! These vines are 80 years old at least, giving a Beaujolais of incredible depth and sinew. Carbonic maceration is the process that usually gives Boje its bubblegummy notes – they’ve toned that way down here. It’s still characterful, but with the structure for ageing, too. It’s been aged in cement for eight months, saving it from unnecessary oakiness, but allowing it to settle into its stride.

‘My tasting notes: "A touch reductive on the nose, but full of dark berries and spice. The palate is awesome. Fresh as it should be from a high altitude place.. concentrated, with abundant tannin, nothing course, really nice tannin, slightly piquant on the finish. Medium body. Classy wine - really concentrated and tightly wound. The wine will live for a long time."

The owner and maker of this wine also runs the iconic Châteauneuf‐du‐Pape estate Domaine Pegau with her father. This wine is her negociant wine, a tribute to her friends in and around the Rhône. It’s an 80/20 syrah/grenache blend (from 45 year old vines on average), so feel free to compare and contrast with any such McLaren Vale blends, and spot the differences. There are many. This is a great illustration of where terroir trumps variety. Similar fruits, but spicier, more elegant, finer-boned with more subtlety. Completely unoaked too, which highlights how impressive the fruit structure is. An excellent example of a classic.

Platinum medal Decanter World Wine Awards 2019

A massive score from Decanter, no less. This is serious business. Rioja in its absolute prime. Deep, dark red-blooded fruit flavour jumps out of the glass at the merest swirl. Black cherry, plum, coffee cake, nuts, spices, tobacco and leather - it’s all there. Tannins are still vibrant, but unobtrusive, softened just enough by patient time in the cellar. Spain makes all sorts of wonderful wines, but there are reasons why Rioja is still king. Reasons like this.

New to the 'fo

I think I’ve found a new favourite producer - from a winery and region new to the ‘fo - Adega Mãe, who are based north of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. I tried a line-up of their wines recently and they all punch well above their price point, with classic ripe fruit that you’d expect from Portuguese red blends and the influence of the nearby Atlantic, bringing freshness and minerality. So now, about the wine: there is fruit compote and a touch of cinnamon on the nose. The medium-bodied palate has so much fruit, it’s just delicious. A little lick of vanilla is there but the stars are the red fruits and berries, complimented by a bit of spice and mellow tannin. It’s not dissimilar to Grenache-based wines - a side step from Spain and plusher than what you’d find in the Rhône.

Made by the esteemed crew at Château Sixtine in the Southern Rhône comes a spicy mix of grenache, syrah and mourvedre. Ripe and juicy red-berry goodness, but not lacking in savoury notes and structure. Just what you'd expect from a producer of such calibre.
