Euro Reds 3.0
- Mixed
- Various
Even after many a tasting and many a trip to the vineyards of Europe, it still astounds us the variety of wine that is found in such a small area. Umbrella’d under the term ‘Old World’, the wines are characterised by old vines and generations of vintners who have crafted unique and culturally-specific wines over the centuries. This pack highlights a wide variety of reds, all unique to their corner of the continent and showing off that their region does well.
You may have noticed this, and other, packs on site are looking a little less snazzy than usual, mofo. It’s because we’re working from home to help the fight against COVID-19 and keep staff safe. All that secret military technology we use to make things look pretty is back at the office. We reckon that, so long as the wine is good (and it is!) it doesn’t matter too much under the circumstances. Hope you agree!
Each pack includes ONE of the following:

This black malbec has a fascinating, visceral, just-fired rifle kind of flinty smokiness, underwritten boldly by piles of ripe red and black berries. Crushed sage and mint, a little warming doughiness. The palate is warming too, spicy and dense, with powerful tannins. It maintains a lightness of character thanks to all that bright fruit, but the mouthfeel is certainly as serious as you’d expect. Really lovely balance. Ideally have this with a side of cow.

There are many who believe that you need to spend big to find quality in Burgundy. And then there are wines like this that give the two-finger salute to the rules and the pecking order. This beauty is definitely punching above its weight, with bright berry fruit and cherry slice aromas lying on a bed of carob. It’s bright and bouncy. Playful and fresh. Nervy and delicious. And it’s so versatile with dinner. Enjoy with a provincial inspired roast chicken with lemon, rosemary, garlic and black pepper. Step it up with a roll of roast pork. Or with your favourite Thai noodles. You can’t go wrong!

They drink dolcetto in Piemonte while they’re waiting for the nebbiolo to ripen, or so they say. It’s probably fair to assume that not all of our mofos have vineyards planted to nebbiolo. You can drink it while your Barolo’s cellaring, though. It’ll give you much more time to enjoy it and all! And enjoy it you will. This is a concentrated wine, bursting with rich, juicy fruit. There’s depth to it, and plenty of interest in the glass. Think pinot with more body, or merlot with more cherry (and character). There’s no oak, so it’s all about that fruit flavour and fun drinking. An ideal candidate to take to dinner parties. Being Italian, it’s naturally charming, and it’ll pair with pretty much everything too.

Outstanding consistency from This half/half sangiovese cabernet blend typifies Toscana IGT (aka Super Tuscan), with all the cherries and sandy tannins you’d expect, plus structure, plums and blackcurrants from cabernet and a few good licks of chocolate and vanilla from judicious oak use. So here’s where we are, in a world where the likes of Gaia and Sassicaia have paved the way for entry levels from Italy of this quality, just because they don’t conform to outmoded rules. Let the Italians experiment, I say!

We have stocked the Herència Altés straight grenache in the past and the response from our mofos was overwhelmingly good. This year, we’ve gone with their shiraz/grenache/carignan blend as quite simply, it won on the tasting bench. From their high altitude, organically-farmed vineyards comes a wonderful wine - ripe and deep, with a medium body. There is a combination of fruit and spice, the main highlights are plum and licorice, making for a bright, yet deep wine. My notes said ‘seriously good’, which is good news, because it’s also seriously affordable.

Bring mofos together with L’Orgie, our first global collaboration. In collaboration with Château Sixtine, we bring you a French orgy where only three are allowed. Who are the mysterious three invited to L’Orgie? Well, they go by the names: grenache, syrah, mourvèdre. Three’s never a crowd, it’s a party. Don’t feel a Rhône, join the French fun with L’Orgie. The two words that come to mind for L’Orgie are plush and lively. Sweet raspberries are the driving force in this wine, sitting with plums - both rich blood plums and the puckering pink ones. It is a medium-bodied, spicy wine with soft and mellow tannins. If you are a seasoned Rhône drinker, take note: this is on the more powerful end of the spectrum.
