This is delicious new wave Chianti. It’s got a plushness and richness that can often be lacking in the region. There’s all of that glorious varietal character that is drinking delightfully now, and has undeniable power to age for much longer. Think plump sour cherries and cranberries, underlaid with gravelly terracotta notes and dusty tannin. Chianti is THE food wine, so don’t miss the chance to pair with some Tuscan fare.

Sourced from 50 year old vineyards in the epic Ribera del Duero region of Spain, we welcome Legón, from Bodegas Vilano. This is their delicious, true to form Crianza with elegance, flair and va-va-voom. Rich and full-bodied, with lively notes of dark, spicy cherry and plum combined with a handful of dried herbs, black pepper, muted oak and firm, grippy tannins create an exciting red that’s ready to be enjoyed. Aged for 14 months in French oak, rested in bottle and shipped to our thirsty shores - this one is ready to go.

The International Wine Challenge called this wine “stylish and effortlessly balanced”, which it certainly is. It’s that style of classic Reserva Rioja, which indicates at least three years ageing and a minimum one year in oak barrel, in this case a combination of 65% American oak and 35% new French Allier barriques. This wine was picked on the riper side, so there is an abundance of juicy fruit character balancing the sweet and spicy oak. At four years old, all elements are starting to harmonise and the oak tannin is slightly softening. The colour is vibrant ruby and the fruit is on the plush side, balanced by that tannin.

This 100% syrah is from one of our current faves- Maison Ventenac- who make all sorts of wild and wonderful wines from across France. This one is a bit more familiar - some would say the French take on an Aussie classic. It’s a fresh and nervy syrah (or shiraz), with a perfect medium body, hints of spice and heaps of red fruit. It’s the kind of joyous wine that you’d take to a picnic, pop in the esky and open with a shoe to show off to your mates. Certified yumm-o!

The Langhe region of Piemonte famously encompasses both Barolo and Barbaresco. These are of course the high-end wines with high-end price tags made from 100% nebbiolo. This is what gets the most attention internationally from the region, but it isn’t generally what the locals drink. For their imbibing pleasure, they turn to Langhe Rosso, which is usually a blend of dolcetto, barbera and of course nebbiolo. They aren’t too fussed with what goes into it as long as it tastes good. And taste good it does!

And in the Rhône, grenache will shine! There's been a few words to describe this wine, 'hedonistic', 'sexy' 'lively' and 'pleasure bent'. Do you get the idea? Michel et Tina have done wonders for the great grenache here, sprinkling a little bit of mourvèdre and syrah in for structure. Aged for a year in concrete vats, the fruit in this wine is turned up full volume: blueberries, pepper, violets, blackberry and some orange zest filling out the round palate. If we have one criticism, it's that this wine is too addictive.
