Why do we love this case?

Fire up the old 2CV or Fiat 500 and let’s hit the road, mofos. This dozen takes us through the sights, smells and tastes of the old world. Soak up the history, and the unmistakable flavour, of the classic styles that defined wine for centuries. We’ve got the big three covered in this case: with entries from France, Spain and Italy. Take a trip of a lifetime from the comfort of your living room.

You may have noticed this, and other, packs on site are looking a little less snazzy than usual, mofo. It’s because we’re working from home to help the fight against COVID-19 and keep staff safe. All that secret military technology we use to make things look pretty is back at the office. We reckon that, so long as the wine is good (and it is!) it doesn’t matter too much under the circumstances. Hope you agree!

Each case contains TWO bottles of the following:

There are many who believe that you need to spend big to find quality in Burgundy. And then there are wines like this that give the two-finger salute to the rules and the pecking order. This beauty is definitely punching above its weight, with bright berry fruit and cherry slice aromas lying on a bed of carob. It’s bright and bouncy. Playful and fresh. Nervy and delicious. And it’s so versatile with dinner. Enjoy with a provincial inspired roast chicken with lemon, rosemary, garlic and black pepper. Step it up with a roll of roast pork. Or with your favourite Thai noodles. You can’t go wrong!

Outstanding consistency from This half/half sangiovese cabernet blend typifies Toscana IGT (aka Super Tuscan), with all the cherries and sandy tannins you’d expect, plus structure, plums and blackcurrants from cabernet and a few good licks of chocolate and vanilla from judicious oak use. So here’s where we are, in a world where the likes of Gaia and Sassicaia have paved the way for entry levels from Italy of this quality, just because they don’t conform to outmoded rules. Let the Italians experiment, I say!

Raymond Usseglio is a biodynamic Châteauneuf-du-Pape maker with a cult following and a bit of an outlaw, and this is signature outlaw wine. He’s gone so wild and crazy with it that he can’t state the vintage on the label, so it has to be labelled Vin de France even though it’s probably all from the Rhône Valley. Put it this way: the Usseglio fam don’t bother making for the masses, and they have a 100-point rated red. So no big deal. Semantics aside, this is packed with super fresh berries - raspberry, strawberry, loganberry - plus distinctive chinotto and blood orange. There are even stone fruits on the palate. It’s lovely a fresh with medium-to-full weight, grippy and fruit-driven without being too serious or too flippant. A glorious interpretation of grenache-based red with no affectation, but will yield lots of affection.

Italian Import

Don’t let the name fool you. There’s nothing primitivo about this incredible vino. Lovers of plushness and complexity look no further. Rich, ripe berries, with spades of spice and buckets of herbs make up the luscious palate. An air of violets hangs over the whole, giving aromatic richness. For those who didn’t know, primitivo is actually the same grape as America’s zinfandel, just grown on its home turf in Puglia, Italy.

TCeller Masroig (pronounced ‘ce-yeah ma-rosh’) is a co-op from one of Montsant’s most special spots and is considered among the region’s best producers. The community work together to craft excellent wines across local varieties - in this case, 100% carignan. It’s from steep, south-facing slopes, with hot days and cold nights making the grapes strong. This is a firm and ripe wine with wonderful plum, prune and herbaceousness, strung together by fine acidity, and food-friendly drying tannin. If you ever get to the area, a stop at the cellar door is a must, where their Decanter-awarded wines sit next to their refill-your-own barrels of tinto and blanco.

Bobal is an up-and-coming red grape from southwest Spain that has been steadily increasing in popularity in its home country. Not a lot has made its way Down Under, so we thought we'd pop it in this lineup to give you an idea of what the Spaniards are enjoying. It's medium bodied, full of dark berries and very drinkable indeed. According to Decanter, "In Utiel-Requena Bobal has a long and distinguished history; amphorae and limestone lagares from as far back as the 7th century BCE". Sounds good to me.
